For those of you who don't remember this thread:
http://www.clubb5.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=71549&highlight=

I was having soft limp mode problems. (you can read about it in the first post of that thread.) That soft limp recently turned into hard limp just about EVERY time I mashed the gas down. At ANY RPM.

Well, this weekend I ordered the 1.8T overboost solutions kit from

www.boostvalve.com

and I installed it this afternoon. Install was a breeze (less than an hour) and I have my boost dialed down to 22psi spikes, which I'm much more comfortable with.

Good product, *very complete kit*, Very good ship time, and I havn't used the "customer service" yet, but everything seems good.

This thread will probably disappear in a matter of days, but I promised everyone I would share what I did when I solved my limp problem!

Hey Spanky, i need some help . I'm having a similar problem tonite with my car. I have a Wett chip for my K04 B5. It's been going good for a while until this week. First it started off with the car idolin high then dropping. WHen you try to gas it the engine boggs then dies. When you start it up it cranks for like 10 seconds then catches itself then starts with a BADD ODOR. When you drive, it spikes to about 20, so i let off the gas, then i drive normal then the check engine comes on, this happened today too. When i put my obd tool on it, it says engine coolent temp sensor out of range, and speed out of range. Now i don't remember speeding to a point where the engine would say i'm out of range. Plus now i'm only getting 6 lbs of boost. What could be the problem? :weirdo:

Okay, so....

- You have a hunting idle @ start up
- When you gas it (at any speed/gear?) somehow the computer is cutting fuel so the engine dies
- After the engine dies its a hard start, and something smells bad
- You get CELS all over the place
-Your OBD tool has a speed out of range, and coolent temp out of range
-You're in limp mode

Dude. Something in your setup is making your computer take shits.
I'll try to break it down.

-Hunting idle could be a couple of things...I'd take off your throttle body and clean it if you havn't recently...Be sure to re-adapt with a VAGCOM when you re-install it.

-Your stalling problem... Maybe your injectors are shot... Check that

-Cranking your engine for 10 seconds isn't koser. Your dry firing the injectors because something in your fuel system may be messed up. I'd change your fuel filter...

-About your OBD codes, I'm not too savvy on those, maybe someone else can help.

-Your running 6 pounds because you're in soft limp.. If you turn your car off and you're STILL @ 6 pounds, you're in hard limp. Disconnect your battery, but I tell you this, if you are in limp mode it's for a reason. The computer is trying to "protect" you from something.

I'd start a new thread and let everyone know your car's information....

good luck!

Spanky,

can you share the pics of the overboost control installed?...

I'm not sure If it's worth it for me to have this since I don't hit soft limp regularly. However, this will just add to my to do list when I get bored. :)

Also, how accuarate is the dial setting to the actuall boost you get?...

Does this overboost control add to holding boost longer or just stops boost from peaking over 23 psi?

TIA

DuttyB5nyc - Sounds like an O2 sensor problem. With the foul odor and hard start it's probably two things. Vacuum leak or your car is pouring fuel in. The latter I've experienced (not a B5) and it was my O2 sensor. After 100K, they go.

At the same time I changed my coolant temperature sensor since I was told they work in unison and it was inexpensive and the car was good to go.

Hope that helps.

Spanky- "hard limp" :???:  Glad to hear you got it fixed.

Just remember, "Positive boost conditions lasting more than 4 hours can be dangerous. If you experience this, notify your mechanic immediately."

Dutty, It sounds like to me that you have two problems. The first is the coolant temp sensor is bad. The Bad odor is way too mauch gas being pumped into the engine. The ECU thinks the engine is way cold and needs the extra fuel, which it probably doesn't at that point.

The second issue is probably fixed with the overboost kit from www.boostvalve.com I would bet you have a simular situation as Steve (Spanky).
I have one of these Boostvalves on my car with an APR ECU and a N75H valve. The boostvalve helps smooth things out for me. I have it set to it's lowest setting. It seems to have helped some of those nasty spikes. It could work for you too.

Hehe...I knew that was the problem Spanky. Just think, a little valve fixes everything. Now if you just get a bugger turbo, I think all will be well in the world. I really want a GT28RS, but I don't know if I am up to putting the thing in. Why don't we get two, then you can make the short trip (lol) over to my place and we can both do it.

1- I'll get right on the pictures. I didn't know if this would generate any interest, so I didn't post pictures right away, but I'll round up a camera, and post it ASAP. I'm actually very proud of the install, as I used EXACTLY every inch of supplied tube.

2- You're right, It probably ISN'T mandatory for you at all. But this is a MBC in it's purest form, and It was a last ditch effort for me to solve my problem. And it worked! People will undoubtably run into problems when using one of these to "Turn Up" the boost, but since I'm "Dialing It down" it suits me JUST RIGHT!

The overboost control ADDS nothing. I suppose if you had a 1.0 or .8 bar chip, and you felt like "rolling the dice" and installing this mod to give you an extra PSI, you COULD do that, but my boost HOLDS to redline the exact same. I just put a "ceiling limiter" on my spikes. Everything else is completely as it was before.

As far as accuracy, believe it or not, the knob is as accurate as you want it to be, unfortunatly there is no numeric gauge to tell you exactly where you are, so there was a little trial and error involved into setting it JUST where I needed it. I first exposed 6 threads in the screw, that made me spike @ 17 psi. Then I exposed 4 threads. I spiked @ 20 psi. Now I have 3 threads showing and I'm estimating I'm spiking a little past 20 psi. (About 22. Right at the threashold!)

Any other questions?

bump for pics. Could you use this with a k04 turbo and not upgrade to K04 software? Seems like you could just dial up the boost a little and get a lot of bang for $46.

Spanky,

I've been reading up on the overboost kit, and it seems to be working very well for vwvortexers.

Are you using the high boost spring or the lower boost one to achieve your boost limit?
There were also few comments about setting the boost too close to the threshole and triggering limp mode in colder weather in higher 4th or 5th gear, but that was in the transverse 1.8T.

BTW, K03 sports runs out of steam around 19 psi, so it might be ideal to limit the boost around 18-19 psi to stay within the K03 efficiency limit.

I'm so close to picking one up for myself, but do you have any last words to add?....

It seems the instructions are overly complicated Don't you just want to unplug the two hoses from the n75 valve and plug them into the boostvalve? Why do you need to tap into the DV line?
