Road force Balancing..
I had to have this done to my Passat, wonderful machine I must say.My car was vibrating @ 68-70mph so bad the rear view was blurry.Only did it at those 3 mph..was annoying since 70 is usually my cruise speed.
So for those of you that are losing your minds over some problems related..this may cure the problem...

this link explains it all, a few pages well worth reading...

Going far beyond the traditional functions of a wheel balancer…
The GSP9700 measures radial and lateral tire forces and provides instructions for solving ride and handling problems such as tire pull and wheel vibration that balancers and wheel aligners cannot fix.
Hunter’s GSP9700 is endorsed and recommended by vehicle manufacturers and proven by thousands of repair facilities worldwide as the industry standard in...

  • Wheel Balancing
  • Tire Road Force and
    Rim Eccentricity Measurement
  • Tire Pull Lateral Force Measurement

Benefits of the GSP9700’s “Three-In-One” Diagnostic Repair Capability:

  • Solves Wheel Vibration Problems Balancers Can’t Fix
Detects non-balance, radial-force-related problems associated with:
    • Tire uniformity.
    • Tire and rim runout.
    • Wheel-to-balancer mounting error.
    • Improper bead seating of tire to rim.
  • Faster Troubleshooting & Repair
Quickly calculates the contributions of the rim and tire to radial vibration problems and presents the technician with easy step-by-step repair instructions.
  • Identifies Potential Vehicle Pull or Drift Problems
The optional StraightTrak® LFM** feature measures lateral tire force, then applies that information to the set of tires, providing multiple placement choices to eliminate or minimize tire pull problems – an otherwise unfixable vehicle complaint during alignment service.
  • Dramatically Improves Ride Quality & Customer Satisfaction
Duplicates wheel vibration measurement and tire/wheel matching methods previously used only by vehicle manufacturers to provide that “new car ride.”
  • Increases Wheel Service Income
Establishes your shop as the wheel vibration and handling control experts. Reduces comebacks and enables you to service vehicles that other shops turn away. Exclusively reduces operating costs with SmartWeight® balancing technology

The exclusive Road Force Measurement® system applies up to 1,400 pounds (635 kg) against the tire. The loaded roller detects non-balance, radial-force-related vibrations caused by eccentricity and constructional variation of the tire and wheel. Unlike non-contact measurement, the roller samples the entire footprint of the tire including the sidewall’s contribution to ride quality.
As an additional alternative to Road Force® mode, the operator may also choose a QuickMatch® mode to quickly measure loaded runout alone.

so in all does it Shave the tire down
Not even close... The thing in the picture is just a roller that exerts force onto the tire once you close the lid, so it detects vibrations and imbalances. All you to to correct it is putting on wheel weights wherever it tells you to. I've noticed wheel/tires that come off there have less weights on them than when they've first come in with.

:( So far, all the shops I have called that also does the StrightTrek LFM in my local area and they will not touch my car because it is a VW...

They ask what kind of wheel, I tell them Audi 17" 5x112 bolt and they tell me to go away. lol.

I need to get this done. The car jumps from side to side on the road.

EDIT: looks like the Ford dealerships (which most of them around here that has the ablity are Fords) will not touch the car. I think i found a Honda dealership that will do it. The closest VW dealership over here dosn't have their name on the GSP website.

im at the dealer and they are saying this is a waist. lateral pull in a car is from "bad tires" and "the LHM and road force will not fit it."

is this bs or are these guys trying to get me out of here..

I am having this done tomorrow, the place I bought my after market rims and tires from has balanced and re balanced and put centering caps on and rebalanced over the last three weeks and I still get a very slight but annoying type vibration here and there. I am hoping this will clear it up. Now the only issue I have is the cheapest place around me is $80 for all four wheels...Am I going to have to have them rebalanced each time I rotate them or rebalance or once this is done can I go back to the place where I got them sense they do it for free?

Had new tires road forced yesterday. Twelve year old drives like new. (Like a new what I hear a skeptic say). I paid $140, took about an hour and a half (wife doesn't ask, and I don't bother her with boring details). There hasn't been any post to this thread for years (literally)?
