This is an inflammatory topic, don't think I don't know it.

Trump is going to be the first ever dictator in the history of North America. It could be good, the best form of government is a benevolent dictatorship. The incumbent can get things done, without worries of being re-elected. This could be the most efficient period of power -ever!

I have my doubts, as others do. I really hope this era ends soon, as the potential for destruction of one of the best democratic institutions in the world is a risk.

What's your take? or is it too dangerous to post your comment :icon_eek:

Our last one was a dictator, need more time to see if this one will be. So far he's done nothing that hasn't been done by many Presidents in the past.

I'll respectfully disagree with both parts of your statement above, Jeff. I won't back up my statement, so you can take it any way you like; I'm not getting into any kind of philosophical argument on the net anymore.

Can't even have a discussion without first deciding what makes either qualify as a dictator. :D Something that neither would probably truly ever do. I can't wait what to see the policy crap of the last 3 years I've had to enforce get rolled back, it was killing small businesses for no reason other than an unbalanced workers and unions first mentality.

As one of the few people who have actually lived under a dictatorship that I have ever met, my wife is scared of our new president.

I accept that it is early to be defining this POTUS, but the initial actions suggest that he will rule with far less patience for democratic process or respect for past conventions or laws.

He was elected, he did not take the position by force. We will have a much better view once his 100 days are past.

I don't normally contribute to these debates, but...

Over the last 30 years of my machining career I have met a fair number of people who have come to America from living under communistic rule. Most notably a pair of brothers who came from Slovakia and a handful of North Vietnamese. All these people had to escape because leaving the country was not an option. Most everyone, during the escape process lost a family member. One individual lost his siblings to gunfire. All them shot in back as they ran for their lives. What's most unnerving to me, is that all those people have the same thing to say. The U.S. is becoming more and more like the country they risked their lives fleeing.

No it didn't. But with each President it gets worse. Not saying it's the President's fault, but with each changing of the guard, the government claws away at the Constitution, hence steering us towards a socialistic society.

I know there's a lot more to the new POTUS than the following, but as VW enthusiasts, we should all be freaked out about Trump's proposed tariffs, particularly on cars:

I've heard two different reports. One, Trump wants to "even out" the trade imbalance between Germany and the US. Basically, we buy more German cars than Germans buy American cars. Well, there's a reason for that, IMO: I'd buy a VW with 100,000 miles on the odometer before I'd buy a brand new offering from any of the Big Three. In any case, Trump has supposedly threatened German automakers with a 35% tax unless the cars are built in US plants. Of course, B7 Passats would not fall prey as they come from Chattanooga, but the Jetta (VW's bestselling model here), the Golf family, the Beetle, and the Tiguan for this market all come from Mexico. The Touareg is built in Europe, as is the Top-of-the-line Golf R.

Two, Trump plans on a "mere" 20% tax on Mexican-built cars that are sold here. In either case, let's take something like a Base Jetta that currently costs about $20,000. Can anyone imagine such a sticker increase to $24,000 in the best scenario, or $27500 with the 35% hike? Most shoppers that would have considered a Jetta would say, "Screw that!" and shop Chevy Cruzes, Toyota Corollas, or Honda Civics, etc, (something with a US factory). In turn, VW sales in this country would be decimated. Instead of 300,000 units going out the door each year, it'd probably fall to 100,000. Two-thirds of VW dealerships would either close shop, or, in the very worst case, VW could say, "We don't need the US at all," and even shut down Chattanooga! VW shows and events would die off with perhaps the exception of air-cooled people that have Chevys for daily drivers already. The point here is that the brand could die here. This tariff MUST be defeated!

Hope you're right. I'm glad I finally got to vent this concern. Another group I'm in deleted my comments because of a "no politics' rule.

I normally keep those topics to myself, but feel this particular subject to be extremely relevant to all who love Volkswagens. I'm going to the Chicago Auto Show in a couple of weeks and plan to ask VW reps about this. (I hope real reps are there instead of just salespeople from local dealerships). I'd like to believe I'm just being paranoid about this, but Free Trade is crucial in today's global auto industry. Without it, we're essentially blackmailed into buying mostly Domestic Big Three cars, and that's even provided they're built here. He's trying to take us back to the 1950s. Something me (and hopefully other VW enthusiasts) have taken for granted has now been replaced with uncertainty.

The trade issue is more about less developed countries where labor costs are undercut, VW could always use Euro built VWs in the US and export their Mexican built cars to other countries. Plus content percentages could end up mattering, etc, etc etc. Right now there's is way more fear mongering than their is even general proposals.

Well, as I said, one alleged scenario has Trump putting a 35% tariff on German cars sold here but not built here. Not just VW, but BMW, MB, Porsche, Audi, etc. So something like a $40,000 Golf R would then have a $54,000 price tag, a $35000 Audi A3 would jump to $47,250, etc. Now for a little humor here: Since Beetles, Golfs, and Jettas would be more expensive than Passats, maybe Passat-only groups, clubs, and shows would materialize....Truth be told, while I'm likely dreaming, that would be cool. When the water Beetle first came out in the late 90s, such clubs and events popped up all over the place, but died off considerably after a few short years. One in particular, a national New Beetle (and now also 2012+ Beetle) Convention is still held in Roswell, New Mexico every odd-numbered year despite being down to about 30 cars. Imagine Passats, which sell 5 times as many cars, doing that. I'd go 1500 miles to hang with 150 other Passat guys in a heartbeat! :)

Did you hear about what the Russians did? Well I did, but I have no proof...but go with it anyway, truth doesn't seem to matter these days.

Has the United States, in the past 100 years, ever had a president who did not come from a political office prior to being elected president? No. This and the alternate reality of the last eight years has some of you, eh :O overreacting a bit. (yesterday was only one month) I'm just glad the twenty-second amendment is still in tact.

If a community organizer (who still plays golf two days a week ;)) can last eight years at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, a businessman ought to at least have a chance at a record turnout in 2020...and you can bet that by then, only legal US citizens will be casting votes. :hmmm:

All those Executive Orders are coming undone like Castles Made of Sand. <- (nod to Jimi H.)
