As I approach my car in the parking lot, a guy parked next to me in a pick up truck is getting into it. He opened the door and as he is entering the truck, it swings open more and smacks my passenger side rear view mirror  . It made a nice loud noise which I follow up with a loud "thank you" directed at the guy. He acted more suprised that I saw it versus the fact that he had just hit someone elses car.

The good part is that there was not damage and I made the guy feel bad by telling him he needed to pay more attention. Thank goodness it didn't hit a metal panel on the car. I am now more paranoid than ever on who I park next to.

I am very picky when it comes to parking. I have been lucky so far. The only door ding I have received was in my own garage at home when a friend of my oldest chiled opened the door to my wifes truck too far.

Glad you handled as well as you did and there is no damage.

My gf backed into my driver side rear door with the my old escort that I gave her. No dents, just a slight scratch and some plastic film transfered from her bumper. And that after my friend tryed to pass me in his 87 325i and lost control, shooting right across the road in front of me, mere inches from my bumper, totaling his car ( trees and a fence ) the night before. Shook us both up pretty good and he ended up with a cut on his forehead. Wasn't a straight panel left on his car. When she backed into it, I thought " man, I made it through all that last night with out even a scratch, and now this." Yes well, what are ya going to do.

I have a very strict set of rules for parking my car. One of them it to not park next to a pickup.

That said, you can't control who parks next to you after you leave the car.

I have a "Good Luck" dent in my right rear passenger door from someone who didn't control their door when they opened it. The wind smashed it into mine. I haven't had it fixed because as long as my car isn't defect free, nothing happens to it.

I try to park in the further reaches of parking lots; you know -- where few people park because they would have to walk that extra 40 yards.
In some cases, it's "that extra 5 feet".

I'm fine with a close end-spot if it's a large spot (you know, those that SUVs can actually fit in :D), otherwise unless I find a large spot with people who won't be likely to hit me, I'm looking at a farther spot. I'm fine with walking as far as it takes, though, exercise is good. 8)

always an end spot where there's only one neighboring car and I can park over the opposite line...I get a minimum of 12 inches between my car and an open door that way. :)

Exactly what we do. I only park in end spots and then 'hug' the curb to put as much space as possible between my car and the adjoining spot. Even my wife does this with the '03 GLI and (knocking on wod) there are ZERO door dings on that car so far.

Man, I had a buddy of mine who borrowed his dad's truck to move and it was in his driveway next to his Lexus SC300. He opened the door and a gust of wind caught it and slammed it into the side of his Lexus. Big dent, scratched paint, everything.

Really stinks to door ding the crap out of your OWN car.

The never ending story of parking !!!
I'm with all you guys. I have 2 dings in my right rear door and I never like parking between SUVs and the like.
Damn, people don't care about other cars.

I have a few rules also.

I park in the furthest space at the mall, resturant...
Never park next to a truck no matter how nice it is.
Never park next to 2 door cars.
Never park next to old vehicles.

The one door ding I got was from a woman in a new MB S-500. I was actually sitting in the car and her door bounced off of my right passenger side door :puke: She pretended it never happened...

I used to think the same about parking next to a hi-line car. Now I just park away from everyone, if possible

Filthy90 - did you do anything?? If I saw someone ding my car, it would be hard for me to not at least say something.

I always park away from people or try to get end spots. It's a rule of thumb for me and so far I have been lucky. My g/f, of course, thinks I'm nuts...

I wish I had a picture of my friend's mom's ES300 (backed and run into a mailbox, more than once on each end). What's worse is dealing with the crap you get for parking so far away. One time I drove three of my friends to a restaurant in Carytown (Richmond) and parked a block and a half away cuz the parking lot was full and so was the street, you'd have thought I killed a baby the way they reacted to having to walk an extra 150 feet  The end of the parking lot since they usually slope toward the store and carts roll downhill and the top levels of parking decks. The top deck of the deck at my University is always full of nice vW's who park in a spread otu formation (no B5s though)
