Smoke from Engine area after driving 15 min.

Hi all,

I am so surprised when I noticed smoke coming out from under the hood when I parked my car after 15 min driving. Please see a video that I took when I opened the hood.

I am wondering if the smoke is related to the recent engine light that I shared in the post below.

One thing to mention is that the car has been parked for about a week during a cold weather. During that week, I moved the car to avoid street parking ticket and I heard squeaky sound when I first moved. I am not sure if that is related to this issue but I wanted to share with you. I will check with my mechanic asap but I also want to share with you to learn more about this issue from your knowledge and experience.

Thank you so much.

best regards,

It's probably just the oil seeping from the VCG, cam plug, or CCT. How is the PCV system?

Hi PZ, Thank you again. I have to admit I have no idea how the PCV system is working now. Is it something I can check with OBD 2 scanner?

Regarding oil, are you referring to engine oil from VCG(is it valve cover gasket), cam plug, or CCT(I could not find out what this is. What is CCT stands for?)? I always had to top up my engine oil every 3-4 months and I have been suspecting engine oil leak somewhere.

Do you think I can safely drive to my mechanic?

Thank you.

Like PZ said, probably a Valve Cove Gasket (VCG). I had smoke on the passenger side of the engine. Dealer said it was most likely the Cam Chain Tension (CCT). Dealer was trying to smoke me .. hehe.. Indie shop changed the valve cover gasket and magically no more smoke..

Thank you for sharing your experience. I will mention when I see my mechanic tomorrow. Do you think I can drive another 15 min to my mechanic with this condition? I am worried if it is getting worse when I drive in this condition.

Thank you so much.

Have you checked the oil level on the dipstick?

If it's the same issue as what I had, it will be fine.

Like Tobias is implying (I think), as long as you have oil on the dip stick, you will be fine. If you burn through 6+ qts of oil in a 15 minute drive, you have bigger problems.

Plus you said you have been topping off every 3-4 months and been driving it....

Engine oil level is okay at low. I was thinking about topping for a couple of weeks.

Hi geronimomo,

Thank you for your response. I will keep you updated after checking with mechanic.
Check your rear cam seals....I had smoke from a similar area. It is really easy to remove the coolant reservoir at right and the intake parts at left and get a mirror in to the back of the heads and see if you have seepage. I had healthy drips from both seals. Replaced both quite easily in maybe 30 min tops total, about $10 each and 75% of the smoke is gone. Now, on to the next leak.... :)
Hi all,

Today I went to see my mechanic but I was not able to fix it since the shop roll-up entry door was not working. He checked my car under the hood visually and told me that he will need to replace Valve Cover Gasket. He said it is a big job and estimated at around $250.

Hi mtnbkr, I will let him know to check the rear cam seals. I assume it refers to the cam plug that PZ mentioned in the post above. I also see from the first video below mentions Camshaft Seal and Cap and I assume they are all the same parts.

From the videos above, I understand why my mechanic told me it is a big job. I am seeing him again this Friday and hopefully he will be able to fix it.

Thank you all and will keep you updated.

The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system uses engine vacuum to pull vapors (unburned fuel/moisture) out of the engine areas where oil circulates. It uses a plastic tube for each valve cover, and through various connections, attaches to the intake.
Valve cover gaskets are pretty easy, as are the cam plugs on the back. The cam chain tensioner seals are more work depending on how they swap them out. It can be done faster without lifting the intake cam, but I prefer to lift it as I can clean the seal area better. Taking my time, it would take me 6 hours to do all of that on a V6.
Hi all,

Today, I went to see my mechanic again and he was able to replace Two Valve Cover Gasket($80) and Cam Shaft Seal($32). Total cost including labor was $250. He told me that Cam Shaft Seal and Cam Shaft Cap are the same(I thought this might be true. Correct me if I am wrong). He also told me that my Passat does not have PCV valve but different type of system which I forgot what he said. (I thought this was wrong based on what I am reading in this post but I did not try to correct him). He said that I will smell some for a couple of days since there are leftover of oils around the fixed area but eventually it will all go away. When I checked under the hood after came home, I was happy not to see smoke from the engine.

One thing I was not happy with was that the mechanic broke front hood support strut. I was surprised when I found it myself at home and I was disappointed that my mechanic did not mention it when I left the shop. I went back to the shop and told him about my discovery. He said he did not know about it and he added that it is just a coincidence and it might have been time to replace. I respected him trying to protect his employee who actually fixed my car but I was a bit disappointed to hear from him that I should be responsible for buying a new support strut. I did not want to argue about it with him since he has been charged me fairly for fixing my car. I ordered an affordable one below from amazon to replace myself.

I really appreciate all your help and support for this issue. I hope I don't need to see that scary smoke again from my engine.

I hope all of you have a great weekend.

This is the cap(in black) and was probably what he replaced as it's right above the exhaust pipe:

Your car has a PCV system, but the valve is different than older types.
The struts fail on their own and often without warning. I've heard one let loose after just closing the hood. You only need 1 and they are pretty easy to replace (about as hard as a wiper blade).

Hi PZ,

Thank you for your email. I am still waiting for the new strut but I feel better after hearing from you that it can happen in any moment. I have been driving since the Valve Cover Gasket and Cam Shaft Cap replacement and no smoke visible so far. I hope this is the end of this smoke issue.

Thank you to everyone who shared your insightful suggestion for the issue. I hope all of you are having a wonderful weekend.
