We are aware of the problem with the slow loading of the discussion forums. We have pinpointed the problem and are working on the solution as you're reading this.

The problem is that the database file that the forum software loads is too large, and some tools and functions with the phpBB software that we need to use to solve this problem currently dont work. It might take a few days to get over it, but we're doing our best and working our fastest/hardest.

There is even an option to switch forum software once again, only because we have found a few too many holes in the phpBB software since we switched over from ZeroForum.

Just try and bare with us.

Thank you,
Thanasi (The GREEK)

Two thoughts GREEK. First, would it help if we archieved some of the old, old threads? I've been using a few other boards, and they kept at most 10-15 pages of active threads, then archieved the rest of them. Second, I'm using mozilla and it's working fine.

Yeah, if you could autoarchive after 2 weeks, and have a search function to access the old threads, it would probably reduce your database size 100-fold. Most Zeroforum sites I've been to center around this theory (or something like it).

If you switch back to zeroforum, will we have sigs again?

Depending on the database you use, you may have to re-org or shrink your tables. This should be a scheduled maintenance thing about once every couple of months depending on fragmentation.
You may also be running into a software limitation where the DB just doesn't recognize a file bigger than, say, 2G. As you approach that size, performance drops significantly.
I'm glad to hear you all are working on it. Keep us posted.
cheers

Just an FYI that the search function is working VERY limited!

I was search for a specific issue and was coming up with no results. Just to check I ran a search for "PhatBox" and came up with NO RESULTS...could this be part of the problem??

I do not know about rest of guys but I sent on 3 occasions today messages that were not loaded on forum. I am writing, clicking submit, it starts to load and bringin' me in front of blank space for answering, like I wrote nothing at all.

Hey Thanasi, I don't mean to second guess you or anything, but the slowdown can't be because of user count, post count, DB size, etc. There are MUCH larger forums than this running on phpBB (2x - 5x larger in fact). What DB implementation did you use? Since phpBB works with MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS SQL server and MS Access, your DB engine selection could be critical. Also, are you running shared server or colocation?

BTW folks, phpBB supports sigs, avatars, profiles, and literally tons of other stuff. It's just not enabled here.

Some examples:
http://forums.gentoo.org/
http://forums.crgaming.com/eqbb/
http://www.scapeboard.com/2/ <-over 1 million posts and 45k users
http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/index.php
http://ian.go-gaia.com/forum/index.php <- 18.5 million posts, 238k users
http://www.macaddict.com/phpBB2/index.php <- bigger than cb5, but way faster.

There are loads more, but you get the idea. BTW, what is the DB size?

This is correct, its a great system to use, but signatures allow pictures and I think thats why T doesnt want to have access to sigs until they find a way to override it.

jwil -Dedicated server, MYSQL. Now, even though those other forums are larger than us, they probably dont have to put up with the bandwidth that we do. CB5's stats shows that for every unique visit, there are 11 general visits per person, PER DAY! Since thats an average, that means theres some people visiting less, and some people visiting over 20 times a day. Thats a lot of traffic. During the day, if theres 2000 people trying to load the same large file, I can guarantee you theres going to be lag.

Search - This IS part of the problem, and it is also being worked on.

Thank ou for your patience.

T, those sites are pushing 300-900Gb per month of bandwith (there is a thread about large sites on phpBB.com). I'm sure that easily eclipses what CB5 is pushing. Some of those sites have 200-300 users online at a time, with spikes of usage up to 450 users, while the record here is 73. This seems to be pointing to a script error or a bandwith problem. Is there any way SKL can run a packet sniffer on CB5 traffic for a couple minutes to see if a particular item is generating excessive traffic?

AIM me if I can help.

Any updates on the search engine? It has become quite annoying and it seems like its limited to 2004 and beyond. Which would be about 22 days?
