I bought an 05 1-8T that had a water leak problem. The lady's mechanic changed the head gasket and it was worse so he told her to get rid of the car.

I bought it knowing it was bad. Just pulled the head and all the exhaust valves are bent and there is small marks on the pistons. Also found the head gasket was in upside down.

I'm having the head looked at or getting a recon head, but my question is on the lower end.
Is is easy/possible to pull the oil pan while in the car and do the rings and bearings?

Anything major that needs removed or I should be aware of ?

It's *possible* to do that, but given the fact that the subframe is in the way, I would just pull the motor to do rings and bearings.

Might as well go through the whole motor. You never know what other kind of issues there are because of the upside down head gasket and bent valves. But it might just be worth it to get a junk yard motor and put it in. Most of the Junk yard motors are still good and the junk yard will usually guarantee that it is good before sending it to you. You don't know what kind of issues happened because of the problems you are seeing now. But if you want to keep the motor the same one then send it to a machine shop and have them rebuild the engine and get a new head and have them check it out and make sure it isn't bad.

OR, start out with leaving the bottom end of the engine alone, since you're not aware of any problems with it.

I "third" leaving the bottom end as-is. To check the bottom end, try turning the crank over manually (use socket on end of crank bolt; rotate clockwise) while having someone watch the pistons go up and down. Listen for any grinding sounds (not that you can gauge the condition of rod or main bearings by doing this). As for the pistons, try to clean them off (individually when they're near the top of each bore) and see how deep the nicks/gouges are. Most likely, all you need is a new head gasket, timing belt and tensioner and the reconditioned head.

I'd go ahead and get new timing components since the head gasket was replaced upside down. :crazy:
