Hello everyone. I have spent most of my time in the other TDI forum but lurked here. I am trying to do some research on a replacement for my 2012 Passat TDI that was totaled out. Enjoy the B7 but do not want to go with another TDI. I am a bit weary of the 1.8 but reading somewhat decent reliability on the 2.5L. Seeking any pros and cons that you can offer. Looking at a couple of them that have around 100L on them. I did all the wrenching on my prior car and have had several VW's.

Thank You for your time in advance

The 2.5 is pretty reliable, but slow. Major problems you may see is a vacuum pump seal, various pulleys needing replaced at higher mileage. Easily fixed and not catastrophic. Also, look at the same years for Jetta and Golf since it is the same motor.

The 1.8T is peppy enough, and reliability from what I have seen is ok, but it depends on how it was serviced. They are a close relative to the 2.0T TFSI motor.

Thank You so much for the input. I use to wrench for VW many years ago. Love the product line, but I am older now and trying to avoid the heavy wrenching. I understand the that these cars require some love and solid maintenance. I have used VCDS since it was introduced back in the early 2000's Just looking for a family cruiser that I can conformably send the wife on road trips and not have to sweat that she might encounter issues :) Great point on the Jetta Golf driveline. Pep wise, I am find with that, my days of zipping around are over and if it is too bad, I can throw a tune and tweak a bit. But prefer to just be standard stock.

I hear you. I'm not a power junky by any stretch of the imagination. I have never gone above a stage 1 tune, so I am comparing stock power with similar vehicles and powertrain. Even the 2.5 in my son's Jetta feels slow in comparison.
