[Passat Pilot]

My 2002, 1.8T Passat has had regular 5,000 mile oil and filter changes. I now want the dealer to switch to synthetic. They say no problem they stock Mobil 1 5W-30.

I have seen some comments about sludge etc. Is there really a serious risk of problems if I switch to synthetic now?

Shouldn't be any problem, go ahead with the syn oil change.

the sooner the better!!!! full synthetic oil is the best, higher heat tolerance=less chance of breakdown>>>>good for turbo since synt. oil doesnt cook, at least not as easy and conventional oil.

The only thing you can't do is mix them. As long as you change the oil and filter you're fine.

hmmm...

not sure why you would want to swtich back and forth anyhow... unless of course you didn't want to pay $6 for a quart of oil anymore... :nervous:

I started at about 45K miles if that helps. Till then dealer used whatever he used.
