I'm working on a car that has a couple of rust spots under the paint. What should I do and what can I use to prevent new rust from forming?

Brush them out with a wire brush, particularly a power one. Then treat them with naval jelly to chemically clean them. After that, you will need to wash them with warm water and dry them with a hair dryer. Paint as quickly as possible with a good primer.

After you do all that make sure you do not touch the surface to be painted without wearing powder free latex gloves or you will have to clean it all over again.

so none of these special anti rust preventors such as Por-15 or the one the eastwood company makes?

OxySolv works well - it is a phosphate cleaner/treater that is very effective. It depends on how much rust you have - you will have to clean out the flaky stuff with a bruch first regardless. I don't recommend POR-15.

I would suggest cotton gloves, not latex ones. I wear my welding gloves (medium weight cowhide) when doing this work, they protect me from the sparks from the grinding wheel/wire brush.

OxySolv is the Eastwood stuff. My dad gets it in 5gallon pails.

I'm doing surface rust. Although I bet a rear subframe is probably easier to work on.
