I saved a wagon (2007 Passat) from the crusher recently, or at least I hope I have.
She's got about 150k miles on the clock, 2.0 automatic. The car is in really great shape, but that's all I know about it. Here's the dilemma.
The reason the previous owner was sending her to scrap was because of every warning light on the dash coming on. From TPMS to EPB and beyond. The car had an old battery in it, wouldn't take a charge, but I was able to boost it and get it running. It drives like a dream, however the EPB Fault is causing a constant beep. It seems to function just fine, but the beep in making the car unbearable. It also has an yellow steering wheel, ABS, ESP, and Airbag light.
I'm at a loss as to where to begin. I've got VCDS on it's way, should be here Tuesday.
I've got really two questions, the first being how many of these systems are tied together, and can be affected by the bad battery, what are the odds that the suspected short fried some of the modules? Where do I start trying to bring her back to her former glory?
Second, I'd rather not dump thousands into this car until I can put a couple hundred miles (in rural Vermont, USA) to make sure she's worth the investment, is there any way to disable some of these sensors (TPMS, Airbag, Abs) temporarily in order to get a better feel for the car?
Note: Obviously, I understand the risks associated with disabling any factory safety systems, and I accept them at my own liability, trust when I say that the car will be used on farm land and private property until every system is fully functional, and able to pass Vermont's strict inspection laws.

Start with a fresh battery. In lots of systems a bad voltage will throw codes. Other than that, there's a way to disconnect the chime (beeper) and you should be able to at least give it a real test drive. Then plugging into VCDS will give you a lot more info on what's wrong. Could be as simple as a bad module from water damage.

When you have VCDS connected The Factory proceedure is to keep a battery charger connected what I do is keep the car running while checking codes, etc....Some of the modules act funny when voltage is below 11 volts....some of the lights on dash that are lit up are the yellow or red? Yellow can be ok, however red means there is more of an issue, more catastrophic...Yellow steering will not clear until driven at least 25 feet straight ahead, good luck!

I've since thrown a battery in it, and the CEL went away, but that's the only update I have to offer. I've put about 10 miles on it with the new battery, and everything else is persistent. The only red light I see is the parking brake. It also seems like the passenger side of the car lifts with the brake engaged, from what I've read that is probably related to a caliper or EPB motor issue. I'm assuming for inspection it will need a complete brake job, something I'm comfortable doing myself, but I'd hate to give those brand new parts to the junkyard if the transmission lets go 100 miles in. I'll keep all this advice in mind when VCDS comes in, I'm just trying to gather as much info as I can so I can hit the ground running when it gets here. I'm excited for my new workwagon!

My 3.6 Wagon 4Motion has 170,000+ I just love the car! Does car have a sunroof? Then water issues can be more possible, modules don't like water or bad grounds. Getting a wire diagram may help you put a plan together for checking each circuit!

FYI, when the VCDS comes get familiar with how it scans and do not clear any codes until you have learned how to save the scans. It is possible to clear yellow cel and they won't come back. The VCDS helps you to remember the before and the after and Ross Tech forum wants you to post the scans also for help, too....

Hold off on the brakes until you get VCDS. The proper bleeding procedure for the ABS requires it. I'm not as familiar with the canbus on these, so I don't know exactly what does what for modules. But I do know that the comfort control module, which is probably completely unrelated, is under the driver's seat and is often messed up by water. I've heard that it being shorted can also cause other problems. Might be worth pulling back the carpet and looking for corroded leads or a waterlogged module.

If you are new to the B5 Passat, there's a big issue with water ingress from the battery compartment. This issue is often what causes the damage to the CCM. So I hope you cleaned out the drain under the battery, and hell, just pull the rubber "drains" and toss them; they're the primary cause of the clog.

this is a B6 platform.......modules like the CCM are located differently as are fuse box and related electrical systems....PM me and I can walk you through the EPB if need be.....good luck and as to water ingress, not anywhere an issue as with the B5 and B5.5 platform cars

Check your fuses, especially in the underhood fusebox. My '07 2.0t wagon had a lot of electrical issues that came up suddenly and were a PITA to diagnose, till I discovered that someone had stolen a handful of fuses. Also, any sign of possible rodent damage under the hood, chewed wires etc?

I had the same model, same year wagon until recently. Never saw a complete christmas tree like you have but the only thing common to all those faults might be a bad or corroded ground connection. I would check the service manual to see where the module is located then trace all ground wires and/or look for any place moisture might have leaked in.

The fact that it even runs and operates tells me that the problem might not be the ECU or Body Module but a ground or power block/relay common to all the warning lights. Also, check with a mirror or other device the back side of the fuse block *driver side panel to left of steering and light controls) to make sure there are no wires bridging other wires where they should not touch.

Weak points found on my 2007 B6 were badly worn camshaft where the high pressure fuel pump is actuated. So bad in fact that it caused fuel to leak into the oil sump and diluted it. Was able to pinpoint it fast enough to not damage the engine but it cost a small fortune to replace the camshaft with level J (latest iteration) and put a new pump on. Also were some electrical gremlins with the rear hatch automatic system. would open with the fob but could only close it with the push button on the tailgate.

Good luck with it. B6 was the most comfortable VW I have owned and I currently have B5 wagon, B7 Sedan (with 2 bugs, 1 transporter, 1 Jetta and the B6 Passat all gone to other owners over the years).

I have a 2008 VR6 4motion wagon (175K miles) so this may or may not be relevant. At about the 150K-mile mark I went through a major operational crisis with the car. The symptoms were quite different but the upshot was the ECM had to be replaced. Twice. Thankfully, a VW dealer service did the work at a set price and I "only" had to pay for original repair which they had guaranteed not to exceed 3K due to the fact that the transmission had to be dropped. It took two months (I got three awesome VW loaner cars) and the involvement of VW Germany, not to mention that the ECMs were shipped from there. I also got a new fuel pump and several other freebies along the way as they tried to figure out what was causing the engine to cut out at speed (initially, it would "come back" where it left off, but sometimes it just stopped and required restarting, eventually it would only die when it came to a stop. It was intermittent which is what drove everyone crazy). Good luck!

Thanks for all the help guys. I finally got the VCDS and got a complete scan done today. Right now I'm chasing the Parking Brake Fault, an intermittent wheel speed sensor is next, as I have the rear of the car lifted. Then next on the list is the two airbag faults related to the rear seat belts.
I'll post the first scan. I'd like to know how to test the harness side of the EPB to make sure power is making its way to the motor, as well as bench testing the motor before buying a new caliper or motor.
Any other insight based on the scan or past experience is greatly appreciated!

in regards to the EPB , usually it is one side or the other that fails,leaving you literally "stuck" somewhere,rarely both sides fail at the same time........I have to leave for work but will follow up tonight with solutions, install and testing,regards, Chief

Immmm back..... so here is how they work, you press parking brake button, two motors spin through a miniature gearbox attached to back of caliper , when a certain "torque" is reached an electrical circuit measuring amperage individually halts each's progress , upon release of parking brake button, motors reverse and spin for a set time limit insuring they are released/away from rotor. The motor gearbox assembly transmits it rotational spin to the caliper mechanism with a male(motor/gearbox) and female(caliper) torx joint, water ,salt and crap get into the internals and rust the crap out of it.......so you park the car and hit the e-brake button, motor drives pads in and transmission joint (torx connection)strips ,grrrrrrr, you hit release and motor/gearbox spins out ,but because transmission joint (male torx to female torx) is now stripped pads remain locked up. So you remove motor ,take a male torx and release/unscrew the locked up rotor pad, put back gearbox/motor but leave wire connection unattached...........to repair, get two offshore new motor gearbox units. Taking a torque wrench with a male torx, screw in the caliper mechanism tightening pad against rotor, do the other caliper ,torquing to the same like 75 INCH pounds each, they are now synchronized (this is real important) put the two new units back on. hit button, they will/might tighten a little ,now hit release and they will evenly release. You will have to use VDCS/Vagcom to get rid of dash console brake icon/light, as a caveat to this you might notice that the E brake comes on every so often "on its own" this is done to compensate for different rotor wear between the rear right and left rotors over time and this gets them back into sync.,regards Chief any questions let me know and will try and help
