I need to replace the coolant flange on the rear of the head. This is on an 01 1.8t AWM car. Has anyone removed the 2 transmission mount bolts and lifted the rear of the trans to allow easier access to this flange? I do have the car in "Service mode" so I don't have to worry about hitting anything in the front of the engine bay of the engine/trans assy tilts forward. Any thoughts on doing it this way?

Hot Damn, I managed to get the flange out in under 30 minutes from the point I was already at! I removed the "4" 13mm bolts on each tranny mount, removed the aluminum heat shield (this also included the stainless line bracket that feeds the turbo). I used a scrap piece of a 2x4 on my jack, positioned it at the rear of the transmission and began slowly lifting.I didn't even need to remove the Kombi valve! I only managed an extra .5" but that along with the improved angle let me get my hand right down there! I would estimate that this entire job (replace coolant flange) could be done in 2-3 hours max if starting from scratch. Hope this helps!! I took pictures of the before and after measurement from the valve cover to the firewall but am a noob to the site so I can't post them.

I just pull the combi valve and that gives plenty of room to work. The later the model year, the harder it is to reach.

I recently changed the "flange" on our non-combi '98, and it was quite easy. But this was helped by the fact that I had previously sawed the PCV pipe in half near the flange, so after a few minutes to remove the passenger-side half, the flange was easily accessible.
