Don't bother spending the money if your budget is just $100. You won't get a detector worth having for that. I recommend either of two detectors: The Escort Passport 8500 or the Valentine One. Both do an excellent job and have their (often vocal) fanbase. I recommend you shop the features between them as you won't go wrong with either.

For $100 I'd recommend saving the dough and using common sense and your eyes. The most detectors in that range will do is give you a false sense of security. One could argue that any detector does that, even the passport & V1 (speaking as a V1 owner).

just remember even a 600 dollar radar detector can't save you from instant on radar....and common sense will save you from more tickets then a radar detector ever will

Actually, depending upon where you're driving and whether or not you're within hailing distance of another car, a V1 or Passport 8500 will save you from instant on radar in many cases. My V1 often alerts me to instant-on up to a half mile or more when the cop zaps a car somewhere down the road in front of me. That's the whole point of getting one of the top units.

The key to radar detection is a combination of a quality detector, vigilence, common sense, and awareness. Feel free to rely upon common sense. I'll see your common sense and raise you a V1 -- and I'll get there safely, ticket-free, and before you.

thanks for the suggestions guys.. I would go for the V1 but i don't have the money for that nor would i wanna waste that much on just a radar detector. I could buy an exhaust system for that kind of money

I always thought if a radar unit was switched off it emitted no signal....go figure shows what i know about these crazy things...anyhow i've had 5 years of ticket free driving until recently when i got an 80 in a 45 and beat that for failure to observe a sign...obviously 35 over isn't exactly smart...I guess thats my point...if you are doing 100 in a 55 a cop will know with or without radar

Well, you understand it well enough, but I think the point made in the earlier posting is that it gets turned ON to paint cars that are ahead of you. There are plenty of situations where a radar detector will alert you to a cop using instant on radar against traffic well ahead of you and perhaps beyond your ability to see. I know my Passport alerts me lots of times about cops using instant on that are not yet painting me.

But I think VeeSchticks stated it best: the combination of your common sense, vigilence, and a good radar detector is a great way to avoid tickets. Sure, it can be done w/o a detector, but to a certain extent part of avoiding a ticket is luck anyhow. So, with decent vigilence you could avoid a ticket for any number of years while not using a detector. Certainly, if you never speed, you should have no worries. But, if you sometimes do, not even vigilence or a good detector will save you from a well placed cop using instant on or, worse, laser.

To the original poster, the V1 is certainly expensive. The Passport 8500 may also be too much $$ for you, but it is about $100 cheaper and is just as good.

I've had a V1 for the past 3.5 years and it has earned it's cost of acquisition back many times in the tickets I've avoided. If you choose to speed, then a good radar detector is essential for you. The Passport 8500 and V1 are the top choices for most people. I love the V1 for the directional arrows, which allow me to determine for myself whether a signal is a false alarm or real bogey.

To a degree, a good radar detector with good range WILL help you against Laser and Instant-On Ka. If the range is good, the detector will pick up the reflected signal off a car that's been targeted in front of you. However, if the cop decided to only spot you, obviously no detector is going to help you. It'll simply just tell you you're screwed....

The best feature a good radar detector has is it's ability to teach you WHERE to look for cops and where you can expect them to show up. It essentially exposes most, if not all, of their favorite hiding spots. So, even if you're without the detector one day, you'll still know enough to slow down going past those areas.

I agree with the instant-on bit, but for laser, the degree of help you get is pretty damn small. My Passport has saved me a couple of times by picking up stray laser signals, so I'm not complaining. On the other hand, it sat there quietly when I got pasted twice earlier this year by laser! I would not count on a rader detector helping with laser much at all. If they are using it in your area, you just have to slow down.

I suggest looking into track time...
That way you don't run the risk of getting ticketed, and you can really push your car...

Echo to this. Got screwed by instant-on once in upstate-NY. Sigh...
