Raccoon vs. Passat, mangled sub frame brace
I hit a dead raccoon on the highway at about 80 mph. I thought I would clear it, but no, it hit the front air dam and banged around underneath like a cinder block. There's a strap brace of some kind on the under side of the car, just past the engine bay, dead center. It is bent and hanging down to a point where it is going to catch on something. It scrapes on speed bumps.
Anybody know what the strap brace is and what it is for? It will require more to fix than simply straightening/replacing the old one. The mounting points have been pulled down, probably stripped out one the threads on one of the mounting points. Why couldn't it have been something smaller, like a dead skunk.

certainly wasn't the andybar. That thing would decapitate a racoon.
It's further back from the last belly pan mount point. I'll see if I can get a picture (without the fur).

That is a funny little brace that isn't well documented. I'm not sure what it does really. But it should be very easy to remove and straighten and replace. It's an aluminum brace for the body shell. If it doesn't take it's old form again, I'm sure it could be had new at the dealership. Or off a wrecked Passat as well.
