I'm rebuilding a 1999 Passat 1.8T busted timing belt engine. Any thoughts about the quality of this kit on Ebay?

Timing set

Who the heck knows? No brand names listed. With something as critical as a timing belt replacement, I'd go with one of the established vendors (Blauparts, ECS Tuning). You get name brand parts in those. Also, in this kit there's no thermostat, no water pump, and no locking tool. You'll need all of that.

Wonder if the previous owner used an eBay kit...
The fact he's offering a kit which includes the VERY expensive valves, for about the price of quality timing components alone, does not bode well. Neither does THIS thread, complaining about the seller.
OK, I got the message. I'd like a few years out of this beast, so I'll look for the right suppliers.

Many thanks,

Actually, when my valves got bent, i bought this kit Audi Volkswagen 1.8 Intake and Exhaust Valve Kit - Audi18IntakeHeadKit2 | FCP Euro its still in my car and running strong with 18 psi out of a t3/t4 turbo.
Thanks for the link! It doesn't work for my AEB engine, but they have that kit too and it's even cheaper! Here's the link.

Were you pleased with the quality and fit of everything in the kit? Anyone else vouch for this company?

Many thanks,
Keen

FCPEuro/Groton =

You should call them and see if you can get the Passatworld discount. They tend to help out the forum folks every once in a while (ie. control arm group buys.)

dont know the 1,8 turbo but I have the 1,8 (non turbo) and was told that this is the same engineblock as the turbo.
I had it to a work shop for timingbelt job and the water pump did not run on the timing belt on my engine

Some do, some don't - sounds like you have an earlier engine, like the USA model ATW.

I was actually skeptic to buy the kit but i didnt have any other choice since other kits go for way over 400$. I was surprised with the quality of everything. the valves were great and all the gaskets were good. I replaced all the gaskets and it hasnt leaked any oil whats so ever. However, be sure you keep track of the valve collets since they only give you what you need and you cant afford to lose one :D
My USA 1999 with the AEB engine drives the water pump with a V belt from the power steering pump, not the timing belt. However, since I'm knee deep in engine, and have 135K on the clock, I'm going to replace it anyway. The service position is handy, but I don't really want to do it again if the pump goes a week after I finish the valve work.

Thanks,
Keen

I've got a FCP Groton timing belt kit running since 70.000 Km, I'm reaching 110.000 km by now with no complains at all.
OK, now I'm p*ssed off. I have everything stripped from the top of the engine, ready to pull the head with my brand new triple square bit. Apparently someone has worked on the head before, because it has polydrive (Ribe) head bolts. Normally it wouldn't be a problem, because I would have ordered the polydrive bit a week ago, so as to be ready.

Now I get to sit on my hands for a week waiting for a new tool which I'll never use again, and never needed to be designed in the first place! Lets design a new bolt head so the consumer can't fix his own vehicle, or at the very least has to buy a new tool from us! B*llsh*t!

Sorry. Rant over. I have searched high and low for a local source for the polydrive bit, but can't find one. Anyone have a source other than online?

Thanks,
Keen
Just to wrap up the thread, I bought the head gasket kit with 20 valves and the timing belt kit from FCP Euro. All the parts were quality bits. Mike at FCP answered my questions promptly. They even supplied three nice little valve stem caps to protect the seals during installation. I'd buy from them again.

(I have no affiliation with FCP Euro, just liked the price and service)
