I was wondering if most Passats start to have problems once they hit around 80K miles? I've only owned my '99 for a little over 2 years. I actually like the vehicle, but it's been a constant hassle. To list a few issues...New turbo just after I got it with around 65K miles (thankfully covered by CA emission laws). Coolant leaks. Replaced all the motor and tranny mounts. MAF went out a few weeks ago. Just replaced both front axles due to some serious creaking. I got an extended warranty when I got it and that covered most of the above (except for the MAF). Paid about $800 and used over $3K so far, so I definately got the better end of that deal. It's going up for sale next week, but I just wanted to see if this is typical stuff at this mileage or if I just got a bad one...

Sounds like some typical stuff. I went through some problems around that mileage also. Now I have 118K miles and she's running strong. Once you get through some of those things you will be pretty well set for a good while. My turbo has yet to go, but both my axles and all control arms have been done. I am prepared to have to do a 2nd timing belt and replace the turbo eventually. I would feel lucky if I was you b/c of that warranty. Good luck.

I have a 2002 1.8T with now 96,000 miles on it (mostly highway). I have been fortunate I guess...had the coil pack issue, replaced vacuum hoses, and now need new CV boots. Other than little electrical issues here and there (steering wheel had to be replaced bc the cruise/stereo buttons quit working at 16K miles; burned up wire harness for a headlight) and regular maintenance, no problems. You are lucky you still have a warranty; I've been without mine for 46K miles now, and nothing major (knock. on. wood.)

Interesting. Almost makes me consider just keeping it for a while and taking care of the problems at hand. Sounds like all the "usual" stuff is done, it's smooth sailing for a while longer. Hmmmm...food for thought, I guess.

The front is still making a squeeking noise. I thought it was low PS fluid. Put more in, kinda solved the problem, but it still squeeks. Sounds rubbery, not metallic this time around and mostly when turning right. Probably needs new struts up front after all the rain/potholes, but I do not htink that is the problem. It also still has the acceleration issues that it has had off and on for the last 7K miles or so. Fine sometimes and accelerates poorly other times. That is after new plugs, air filter, fuel filter, etc.

I've got 95k, and no major problems except for the dishonest and dis-reputable VW dealer service. When should I expect to have to change the clutch? Same question for front brakes??

You didn't mention the timing belt. If it's original, it's a time bomb by now.

It's not paid off yet. I only got it a couple years ago, so I'm still paying on it for a while. That is part of the reason I am probably going to just put it up for sale and start again with something with less mileage.

I just did the timing belt, other belts, water pump, etc a few thousand miles ago (at around 86K). Probably pushed my luck a bit with the original stuff on there, but it held up okay. That was obviously not covered with the extended warranty I purchased, but I did not expect it to be.

I reset the computer yesterday and it seems to be accelerating a little better from and to work. Those are fairly short trips, so we'll see if that stays "improved" now. It did act up after I took it in for the axles a while ago, so I wonder if something that they did at the shop make it go into limp mode back then?

Now I just need to figure out that creeky/squeeky noise up front. I know if someone test drives it, they will hear that and I'd like to either fix it or at least be able to tell them what it is. It's going in for a recall on the rear passenger wheel well liner, so I'll have the stealership take a look/listen at that point. Hopefully do the control arms since I beleive that those are original as well. We'll see...
