This month, we're headed to the left coast, specifically Santa Cruz. Mike hasn't been here as long as some, but he's done a masterful job of pulling his car together. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do - take it away, Mike!
Mikehawk said:Hey there PW,
First off I know everyone says this, but this Passat of the month nomination is an honor. Thank you. I remember when I first joined PW I was looking at the POTM past and present thinking "WOW these people have way too much time and money", but I was totally inspired how nice these can look, and how unique every ones car could be.
I came to own my Passat by a crap shoot. I needed a newer car, because my 99 Seabring was having auto tranny problems and wouldn't pass smog. I went to the Ford dealer to buy a new Mustang GT. I had 10 grand cash to put down, the rest to finance. Ford turned me down due to lack of credit history. I stormed out, and was on the hunt. I saw my 03 passat GLS 1.8T 5spd on craigslist it looked good The PO had tinted the windows, had Zender wheels, Neuspeed/Koni shocks, 5spd and 50k on the clock. I was surprised how good it looked. I always thought of VW as a girls car, but this car looked awesome! If it was stock I wouldn't have looked twice at it. When I went to take a look at the car I brought my mechanic friend, he said it's tip top, and he would buy it. The owner was super anal about maintenance, and car care it showed. He was a Audi guy with an S4,TT,A6 in the driveway. I offered him 7 grand and he bit, I came with cash the next day.
I found PW a few days later while looking for mods, I was hooked. I believe my first post was for CIA. In the first week I bought a badgeless grille, stubby antenna, and blueish headlight bulbs. I was hooked.
I went to my first PW GTG about a month after buying. Met some cool guys, and learned about all kinds of mods. Tokie told me about a Votex sale going on, I was like shhh yeah right I'm not sinking $1,500 into a car. A few weeks later I bought it...
I met Zack - Nuisance at a 2man GTG.
He has helped me out, given me ideas, so much help with my Passat it's stupid. So many long, cold nights in his garage with everything that can go wrong, going wrong. And bam he is able to fix it. I owe him my first born, he made me sign a contract. Seriously bro I wouldn't be here with out you, your a good friend.
I am now the anal car owner that often takes better care of my cars than I do myself. I used to just think of a car as transportation, and the goal was to put as little money into it as possible. Not the case today, I now am the total opposite. I enjoy wrenching and performing all my own maintenance. I've learned so many skills from DIY threads. From control arms to timing belts. I will be driving my Passat for many years to come. Thank you Passat World.
I've done so many things to this car it's hard to keep track of it all.
