Hi all

I have a UK Passat 1.9 TDI 130bhp estate on a 2005 plate. The problem I am having is trying to reprogram a new key to the vehicle.

I have, or had, 2 working keys which would both unlock, lock and work etc, until the wife managed to put one through the washing machine. Despite drying it out and replacing the battery, that key is now defunct (no response to button presses and no red light indicator on the key).

I managed to get another one with exactly the same part number (HLO 1JO 959 753 AH) from eBay. Key seems to work ok, in that when the buttons are pressed, the red indicator light on the key fob lights up. Took the front off my old damaged key (with the transponder and key blade in it) and fitted it to the back (electronics and buttons) of the new key. All I needed to do now was to follow the numerous YouTube videos and advice from forums to program it, and that’s where I’ve had problems.

I’ve done the various configurations – key in the ignition and on, get out close door, lock door, press button, open door etc. Some have shown other configurations of key to program in the ignition, or that key in the door etc. Push the buttons on the one in the ignition, or the ones with the key in the door etc. The problem is, nothing seems to work with programming the new key.

I wondered if there was an issue in that the car was already programmed electronically to only have 2 keys to it. So I tried to go through VCDS to remove the damaged key from the system, but without the full version (didn’t really want to buy it just to program one key), I couldn’t get very far.

So am I missing something that will help to program a new key fob?

Appreciate any advice anyone can give.

Does the key work in the ignition ?
If your problem is only with the remote, try this:

Programming remote portion of your VW Key FOB:
It is very simple but you must have 2 working keys for this procedure to work:

1)
Insert master key in the ignition
2) Turn key to the accessory position without starting the vehicle
3) Insert second key(key you are programming) in driver’s door, manually lock the door
4) Press lock on the new remote
5) After one second, press lock again, which should beep to confirm programming complete.

Here is a list of standard VW Key FOB codes and the model car they commonly fit:

My fob too went through the washing machine. These fobs are not waterproof. At all. If you have the owner's manual (multi sectioned, spiral bound bible of an owner's manual), the fob remote programming sequence is in there. In my original US version, section 3.1 page 29, "Programming the remote control".

1. Insert the master key into the ignition lock and switch on the ignition (don't start the engine!) (my note: You will need a second key (or at least try using the original key (not fob, but key).
2. Lock the vehicle from outside manually using the second master key, or valet key.
3. Press button A (unlock) or button C (lock) on the remote control ONE TIME and then WAIT AT LEAST 2 SECONDS.
4. Press either button once again ONE TIME.
5. Turn off the ignition and remove the key from the igition lock.

The manual programming procedure is complete. The remote control is functional again.
Notes: You have only 30 seconds to perform steps 2 through 4

From my original owner's manual.

Good luck.
