Hi everyone - hoping I can pick someones brain please....the warning light for the airbag has just decided to make an appearance on my dashboard at Xmas time....a great present from my car to me I thought!!! My car is a 1999, B5.

It may be something or nothing, but has anyone had this problem before?

I guess that it may be best to take it to a VW dealer to get a diagnostic, but has anyone got any alternative ideas before the dealership fleece me for an initial £85 charge for connecting a laptop to my car while they sit back with a cup of tea.

Im in the Durham and Middlesbrough area if anyone knows of any good local contacts please?

Thanks peeps!

I recently got the airbag fault. I'm hoping it's either a fuse, or just something I can have reset.

Do you guys have any types of automotive stores over there that might be able to scan your car for free?

After falling through the floor at the price a main dealer wanted to charge me to hook my car up to the VAG computer, I found a great local garage who specialise in VW and Audi in Middlesbrough - called 'Volkswerk'.

At under half the VW price, they put the VAG on my car, diagnosed the fault to a potential loose wire which was checked, they then reset the warning light through the VAG. Absolutely no problems after. they also mentioned that sometimes the wiring to the airbag warning light can be activated by knocking this wire (heavily) by placing items under the passenger seat (where the fault was diagnosed to - such as shoes, etc). Apparently its a common cause of the light coming on.

Main dealers eh....sorted!

I had this problem. Turned out to be caused by a water ingress issue i had already fixed but the water had knackered the side impact sensors under the carpet. Had them replaced at £80 squid a pop.
Then recently light came back on. Seemed to be a loose wire under the drivers seat (caused by me i think).
I used a local VW specialist independant. D & D Auto's in Ashford, Kent.
Top banana.
