part rant, part question...

while trying to replace the valve cover gasket on my B6 A4 (with a 1.8T, AMB motor), I ripped the connector off the upper portion of the lower crankcase PCV hose. ideas? can I drive it until I can replace it?

btw, this is like a 2005 Passat motor. same PCV system...
Pic? Can't picture what you are describing
It feels strange when Jay asks question in here! :)

the lower PCV hose that connects at the back lower portion of the engine, Dan. it connects into the bottom of the hockey puck looking thing on the back of the engine.

lmao! I'm a V6 guy (veteran of 3!), so these 1.8T motors confuse me.
I literally checked twice to make sure if you were really JayTheSnork and thought your account was hacked and a rookie was asking the question under your name. :) Now it makes sense.
I am pretty sure the hockey puck thing is the vent filter, and it also functions as a check valve for vacuum on the V6. It is the newfangled thingy that may or may not have been present in older separator catch can designs.

If you were driving a V6, I would say you could easily go until you got a replacement, but the check valve function of the vent filter on the turbo is probably more critical because, if it is detached, it may create a massive boost leak.

This is supposition. I am not looking at what you are, but that's my 2¢.

Just buy the 034 PCV kit. It will ALL crumble when you touch it. You should be kinda OK till you replace. Just really smelly. Remember, I have the same motor and had to replace my pcv. No build up by any means, but very brittle
already bought that kit, Dan, it's on the way. I figure I don't push boost but very rarely, so a boost leak probably isn't gonna happen. I figured I might smell the oily fumes off the bottom end of the motor.

when I pulled the coils today in prep for the valve cover gasket replacement, there was more oil in the spark plug holes than a couple of weeks ago. after I replaced the gasket, I cleaned the plugs up, cleaned the coilpacks, and then started it up - it ran fine. didn't drive it, just idled it a bit. Matt suggested I put black electrical tape on it, but that adhesive is a PITA to clean up
slight update...

just checked the car after the drive to work (60 miles). there is no oil leakage on the of the back of the engine, so it is probably ok to drive to and from work for the couple of days I am working this week (taking wed-fri off). hopefully, the replacement PCV system will be delivered by this weekend...?...so I can fix it.
Is it #13 below?

I don't think the piece you broke is part of that kit, unless you are talking about the y-hose off of the valvecover.

And don't worry about boosting. #6A and #25 keep the boost from entering the crankcase. parts look slightly different on the AMB, but this screenshot is pretty accurate.

If similar, guessing it's the end of line #24 (that #25 sits in)?

How rough does it idle? When my #2 snapped in half I drove it for about 50 miles before I could fix, extremely rough idle at stops but in motion was fairly OK (obv drove like a granny). Imagine yours is not nearly that bad since on the other side, if I had a different car to drive I'd have parked it.

That was at least 15k ago, still doing fine. :)
I read it again. Maybe it's part 16. wrap it up. and it is not in the kit. The turbo will suck in unmetered air at that point.
Duct Tape...It will last at least a week.
Looks like it will be part #16. If that's the case, it won't be in the kit, but the 034 kit is great. I think Jay's may be late AMB; the kit I used was for mid-AMB (on my 2004 AWM). It eliminated the need for part #24 altogether because it now uses their billet #6 rather than the #6A. I'm not worried about anything happening as a result, though. Jay, if the part you mention is #16, it should be only a couple bucks at most.
Line #24 was added to later B5.5's to mitigate sludge. Pretty much the only reason I didn't go with 034.

Although I guess you could just use a regular bleeder valve instead of metal billet and keep that line.

Yes. That's my plan on my awm and amb

it is the top of part 9, I think. that plastic hose (becomes silicon, I think) comes in the kit, I double-checked.
That's what I originally thought, but your puck valve reference threw me off. BTW, had it been an AWM, it would not have broken. The AWM one is a metal tube.

Wanna see my "temporary" repair that has lasted for over 2 yrs? Don't laugh
