My cruise has stopped working. I replaced the switch on the steering column and found that connection burnt. What may have caused it?

The burning would have been caused by a bad connection, either switch contacts or wiring.

I don't like your chances of getting a good cruise control module from a junk yard, they often failed.
Common faults are bad solder joints where the relay connects to the PCB, and faulty electrolytic capacitors (the large ones) or their solder joints.

This might help diagnose the issue.

Actually, the cruise stopped working after I replaced the clock spring on the steering wheel. That made me think it was the switch. Replaced it. Didn't work.
