Good Evening,

Would have loved to have met on better terms, but, as with any vehicle issue I always come to the forums because of the wealth of knowledge. Bought the wife a 2013 2.5 Passat SE April of last year. We bought it in South Carolina and just drove it to Texas after I got orders to Sheppard AFB. We both LOVE the car and have had zero issues with it until last week. Started running very rough and threw a P0011 Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1). I called a local VW mechanic and he suggested starting with an oil change (timing is run off oil)??? I know nothing about VW's, (Ford diesel guy here, but I love to learn). The oil had about 8,000 miles on it, synthetic and 502.00 compliant, it did look very used. I have not cleared the code yet, would that still be causing it to run bad? Any other options I have before I get it towed to a mechanic who has the expertise and know-how? Once again Thank You and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am at Sheppard as well. I don't recommend the local dealer here at all! I have been driving up to OKC for all of my service. I am not completely sure but it might be the camshaft position sensor.

Thanks cw......I was just about to go to the dealer but now i am contemplating it. I have been talking to a guy in Iowa Park who is very good with VW's but he has a 2 week wait. I may just have to wait, would rather help the small guy out anyway. Thankfully I have two other vehicles i can drive.

cw,

I have been talking to Laslo but he is booked until at least the 25th. I can wait as I have another vehicle for my wife to drive but as a maintainer I hate having a vehicle sitting broke. I have a platinum warranty that covers pretty much everything. They said they have room for it on Wednesday. I am going to look at your websites and see if i can learn anything. Thanks for the help;).

i have a friend with a 2.5 (older) golf that had a same code. the engine ended up being WAAAAAAY out of time after a chain tensioner took a dive.

the oil change was a good idea to start. the tensioner mechanism is variable based on oil pressure created by engine rpm. (crank driven pump)

if it's not much more of a drive to arlington (ft worth area) than it is to go to okc for service, there's a shop nearby named "dub squared" that supports a lot of people in the local group. good guys!

Good news (so far)!!!!!!!! I was able to get my car up to Laslo last Wednesday and had the car back Friday evening running great again. I don't have the paperwork with me explaining what exactly he did but it sounds like this car may be finicky with oil. Basically Laslo removed the part in question, cleaned it up, bench checked it and reinstalled.....everything worked perfect and only charged me one hour of labor. What I am happy about is that he did not try telling me I needed a new part, he did suggest if it happens again what steps to take. All in all a great experience.\
