I just found out that last time I had oil changed they overfilled by 1/4"
that is, oil level is a quarter inch above the upper bend of the stick.

I've driven now about 3k miles. The manual states clearly do not overfill.
Is this a problem or should I leave it untuil next oil change?

The oil gage is still the most accurate measure you've got, so go with it.

Buy a vacuum tester kit from Autozone (~$20). Get one of the kits that have the small collection jar in the line. Put the vac line down the dipstick and you can draw off a bit of oil at a time. Keep checking the dipstick and drawing out oil until you're done.
