I usually do 8000 kms per oil change using 5w40 VW spec oil and Mann filter and do the change myself.

Today I picked up the car from VW after a window regulator job that I didn't feel comfortable with doing and decided to also get the oil change done because it was getting chilly and raining alot.

Everything went swimmingly and I noticed that the oil change sticker says 15000 km intervals, I asked and they said that's the recommended interval for my car.

It seems very high, i am a little shocked. I thought sludge would build up.

What are your oil change intervals?

Also am I the only one that moves the coolant reservoir to get the filter ? Lol

10K mile changes is what I do with my V6, using M1 0W-40. I keep the 1.8T to 5K miles, as the oil just gets worked harder in my opinion. The coolant reservoir? I don't just move that for room, I disconnect the big "S" hose at the throttle body and move that too.

Not the first time a dealership has had their own "recommended" service schedule. The factory service schedule is every 8km or 5k miles. Stick with what you are doing.
I thought that was really high for a VW, what's really weird though is my friend says that BMW recommends oil changes once a year or 24k kms for his E90. What type of oil do they use geez it couldn't be that good could it ? Maybe they were hoping my car would break down and I would buy a new VW ? :p

I used to ( when I had a hoist ) remove the wheel and use a filter cup on a really long extension .. I felt like a caveman once I discovered its easier to move the reservoir. I had a fear of breaking the connector a couple of times.

Exactly hirnbeiss, plus a NA motor puts less stress (heat) on oil vs a turbocharged motor. Then you also have the factory wanting to tout "maintenance free" (with long service intervals) so all the soccer moms will be happy.

Not "wrong", just that a VW dealer would prefer longer change intervals so your engine wears out sooner...so you can buy another VW. (Dealership Logic)

Since day one (June '99) I've done synthetic oil changes (AEB 1.8T) at 7,500-8,000 mile intervals using Mobil 1 5W 40 and once or twice Shell Rotella T 5W 40. 7,500 mile change intervals are the recommendation for European B5s, so that's good enough for me.

It depends on what type of driving you do. My 1989 Dodge Spirit (second best car I ever owned, after the Passat) had what I considered a very sensible OCI: 3k miles for severe service, including urban stop-and-go, but twice that for longer-distance mostly freeway cruising.

Because of urban driving and low annual mileage accumulation, I have the Passat on a 1-year / 3k mi (whichever comes first) OCI, with Mobil 1 OW-40 and the big Purolator L40316 filter. I disconnect the throttle body air duct and the coolant recovery tank and put a plastic grocery bag around the old filter before unscrewing it.
