I got a 2003 Passat 1.8T a couple of weeks ago. While worrying about changing oil my local guy said synthetic oil was $11/Qt. I had visited Wal-Mart recently and so went to them to get the Valvoline for $15.88. I called the number on the back of the Valvoline container and spoke with "Mike" and he assured me that the synthetic blend MaxLife would meet the requirements of this engine. I took the oil back to my guy and he ordered an OEM filter and changed it. He charged me $80 for the filter and the change which I thought was too much. And, they put all 5 quarts in. I had told them that it was 4.3 or 4.6 according to the manual, but, oh well, another lesson learned. Now the oil is about 1/4 " above the bend and I've been reading the "overfilled" posts. I'll sleep on it but would appreciate any comments if the Noob thread is read by anyone. Thanks

Urlik:
Thanks for reading and posting.
I let it disturb my sleep and reluctantly when back to the shop this morning but the owner will not be back until Monday and today is Saturday.
I measured the height of the oil and it is a full 1/2 inch above the bend. Is it essential that some be removed?
The $15.88 plus tax at Wal-Mart was for five quarts and they put it all in.
Any comments would be appreciated and I think I'll also call the local VW dealer for their opinion.
Thanks, it is good to have someone to talk to about this stuff.
