Out of the blue my AWM auto wouldn't go into gear. You start it, shift into reverse, takes a second then clunks into reverse, put it in drive, then no gears at all. It just revvs like it's in neutral. The gear indicator on the infocenter has every gear selected (like a solid bar across the bottom). I put it in park then shut it off, wait a minute then start it and it's fine. Not a single light pops up on the dash besides the solid red gear indicator bar (you can still read the gears btw). Still need to check vcds. Could it be a faulty transmission sensor?

It's going into 'limp' mode. Mine did the same and it progressively got worse to the point I had to plan where to park to limit having to use reverse. The clunking isn't good as it's putting stress on the internal components of the trans, trans mounts and the flex pipes for the exhaust.

Could be a few different things. Bad TCM, multi-switch, sensor, electrical connection, low or burnt fluid etc.....You need to have it scanned and post the codes before taking guesses in the dark. Try to avoid having to use reverse at all cost.

ok here's what i got:

1 Fault Found:
17090 - Transmission Range Sensor (F125)
P0706 - 003 - Implausible Signal
Freeze Frame:
RPM: 928 /min
RPM: 864 /min
RPM: 0 /min
(no units): 0.0
Torque: 8.0 Nm
Temperature: 13.0°C
T.B. Angle: 0.0°
(no units): 1.0

cleared it and seemed to work again. almost seems like it only did this when engine cold. obviously the next step it to check the sensor

You need to check the wires and electrical plug at the harness where it plugs into the tranny. Make sure it in good condition. Disconnect the electrical plug and clean the contacts with contact spray and reconnect. Check the TCM for water damage as Dayrook mentioned. Unwrapping and checking all the wires carefully paying particular attention to any splices. Making sure nothing is corroded, broken and the wires in the connectors have a tight secure fit.

Well JJ, I got 2 things going against me there. 1 is that I had a oil pan leaked that sprayed oil all over the underside (cleaned as much as I could see). 2. The interior flooded twice on me. First time the it sat in 3" of water for about 2 weeks. Didn't seem to harm anything so far.

You need to get under the car and unplug the trans electrical plugs and clean them with electric contact cleaner. You will have one large plug and one smaller one that connects to the multi-function switch on the side of the trans.

Pull the carpet up and check the TCM for water damage. Also check all the wiring going to the TCM for any corrosion, breaks. That means unwrapping the bundle of wires and checking one by on along with any splices that may be there making sure they are tightly crimped together.
