Hi all,
Just became a Passat owner last month, a 2000 GLS 1.8T. I like many things about the car, but about a week after I got the car, the engine light come on, and then the "EMISSIONS WORKSHOP" message whenever I start the car. After reading about the check engine light on several forums, I came the conclusion that nothing serious is happening- My car runs the same as it did before, and the fluid levels are fine, the gas cap is secured. At first I thought I had to take it to the dealer right away, but all I really want it for the light and the warning to go away. I have read about the VAG COM software, as well as cheaper OBDII code readers, that claim to be able to reset these codes..Will the code come right back on if all you do is reset? I have read about problems with the MAF on this engine- Should I just take it to the VW dealer this time, hoping that they will fix it quickly, and correctly, or should I invest in a code reader right now, because it will pay for itself in the next couple of years?
Thanks..

How's the turbo doing? Does it feel like it consistently spools at the same time? Ot does it feel like there is excess lag? Does it cut off quickly?

Check the vaccum hoses for cracks and tears.

I do believe there are cheaper tools that can pull the DTCs and reset them, but that's it. No measuring of blocks, no recoding, no TBA or anything like that.

You can go to a PepBoys and maybe even AutoZone to get the codes read. Most those places will do it for free. Otherwise, chime in on here, if someone is local to you and has a diagnostic tool I'm sure they'd be more than willing to help out.

Oh yeah, Welcome! Great purchase! I am in the process of selling my 2000 GLS 1.8t, it has been a dream of a car. I will miss it very much when it goes, but I can't have 3 cars.

How can you tell if the Turbo is spooling? And were are all the vacuum hoses located? :???:

Take it to the where you purchased it ( if it doesn't go away after about 10 starts could be the gas cap didn't get tightened enough), and tell them to fix it. You just bought it only a month ago. Also, like mentioned early go to like Auto-zone and have them run the codes that will give you a better idea on what the problem could be? Good luck and welcome. :)

Thanks for the sugestions- As far as the dealership where I bought the car- It is a Honda dealer :p , and for various reasons they will not be allowed to work on my car, and there was no warranty with the car..I have already decided that they would charge me full price, and then I'd have to take it to a VW specialist later, to get things done right. Anyway, my car has 62K miles, and otherwise everything works..I think I might look into the coolant sensor idea-the other day, I was looking at the coolant overflow tank, and it was a little high..When I unscrewed the lid, it was still pretty warm, and spilled over a little. I read in the manual that sometime the coolant may be slightly over the max line, so I don't think there is a problem there. My thermostat seems fine, and never goes past halfway..

Hey there Welcome to the Club

Not tightening the gas cap until it clicks could cause a CEL also. if it was not tightened all the way, then tighten it and the CEL should go away after a few starts, thats if that was the prob
