Hello everyone, I joined hoping to find "real" information on the airbag recall. I have a 2013 Passat SEL, had issues with the drivers door lock actuator, no big deal... more of a P.I.A. Then the stereo/nav system would just power off by itself (including MMI portion). Had to fight with the dealer to get the car in the 3rd time, 2nd time too but that was a lot easier than the 3rd. They did replace the stereo unit (found out VW uses refurbished units for replacements), but this one powered down whenever it wanted to also. The dealer told me this was "normal" and gave me the Tech Bulletin about the system booting slow, or freezing while using a lot of memory. I had to freak out until the understood, I would not accept this generic CYA Bulletin and my problem was NOT freezing, but powering off. VW advised them not to accept the car again for the Warranty Issue. I bought it as a CPO in November of 2015 so my Warranty is good until 05/2018 or 60k miles.

The dealer was not cooperative, so I had to more or less "force them to look at it". They replaced the unit again with one they pulled from a 2013 Passat Premium. I got the car back today, no problems on my 18 minute drive home. We'll see what happens in the morning... I'll be video recording again on the way to work, as my confidence is not very high that the problem is gone.

My post/question is more because when they delivered my car to me at work (and picked up the loaner 2014 Passat), I took the driver into my place of employment to "sign off" on the work order he had. I demanded a copy of the work order be emailed to me for review before the driver left the lot, and they obliged. Mileage in mirrored mileage out per the work order, I strongly questioned this, as the system was fine sitting idle in Park. The Srvc Mgr adjusted the mileage on the work order to reflect a 6 mile difference. Was this true, I'm not sure... I asked him to drive it home at night and back to work in the morning (they picked it up this past Friday).

ANYWAY, we got inside the building and the driver followed me right to the copier room. He handed me a single sheet (the work order), but had 5 or 6 pages stapled behind his copy that he wanted signed. So I took his stack, pulled the staples and made a copy (front & back). While reviewing "his paperwork", I notice the open recall (as of March 11, 2016) and am stunned/shocked/concerned. I research a little deeper to find that VW tried to get out of the recall. I guess they are busy/cash strapped with the emission debacle going on.

I want to make everyone aware of the issue because when I asked the Srvc Mgr why I had not been informed, his reply was: Volkswagen will send a letter out once there is a fix available. Anyone that watches the news knows these airbags are KILLERS (up to 11 dead now) and there aren't enough replacement airbags available to fix all of the potentially deadly airbags out there. How can VW just keep quiet about such an issue. They don't honor the warranty they offer to get the sale, now they don't advise their Patrons....???

What can we do? Can a VW Dealer disable the airbag/airbags upon a signed request? At least until the issue can be remedied with a safe replacement. I would sooner take my chances of only the seatbelt saving me in a crash instead of the risk of the shrapnel going through my (or my Wife's) face/throat/neck area as has been documented.

Do I smell another class action cooking? Any words of advice are welcomed. Thank you, and stay safe in your VW/Audi.

George K. / Concerned Passat Owner (I still have 2 Passats. One 2005 and the 2013) I kinda hate that I love them... I miss my '98 Passat, things were simple then.

I realize Takata airbags are everywhere, in all kinds of cars. Anyone receive a recall notice from VW? Not that I'm aware of, I know I haven't. At least Honda went public with it, will it take 12 deaths in VW's to open eyes? That's the best part I can take from my stereo/nav unit powering off/on/off/on, making a copy of the dealers papers the "lot person" had when he delivered my car with the 3rd unit put in the car. Had it been anyone else, they probably wouldn't have let me copy everything they had, and I would be none the wiser.

My car is still at the second dealer, stereo was ordered 4 days ago, it's a 1 hour swap, per the dealer so I'm thinking they should've listened when I told them it's not the unit. It's a VW c.y.a. tactic with the tech bulletin. Then they just say "We don't know what else to do", this coming from VW of America. I know what to do, rework/rewire the car from bumper to bumper, then wherever the electrical "inconsistency" is will be remedied. No matter what, Volkswagen HAS TO REPAIR THE ISSUE, it's the law! But thanks for your input.

Well, it's 7+ weeks @ the dealer now. Asked if there was any changes this morning, 8:05 pm now... not a peep. :banghead: Could've done a "frame-off" remedy, in less time since they have all the tools. :wrench:

Hoping to be able to let go of a 2013 SEL, blk/blk w/21k miles @ a real good price, if I ever get it back.
:driving:

Oh yea, got my letter. ?

(9 weeks tomorrow?)
Alrighty then... today (6/8) I'm told the "concern" has not happened for several days since the overlay was complete. Was asked if the Tech could drive my car home tonight and to work for a final concern test. :driving: I told him to drive it home today, tmrw & Friday....if I don't hear anything from you about the "concern" i'll see you sat morning to trade cars back :salute: BUT not giving the loaner (se 1.8tsi) keys back without taking my Wife's car for a lengthy drive/ride  :burger: Still need to see if I can "forget" about a case of beer in the trunk w/out causing anyone in the shop a big hassle.

So now VW changes their offer from Full MSRP Credit towards another VW of same/greater price to a $3,500.00 trade in allowance.

VW will give this to John Doe if he pulls on the lot with another VW to trade in. Get real VW! Full MSRP Credit was communicated directly to the Attorney from VW, so that's what I'm going for... I told them that could drop the $315.00 off the window sticker to keep the #'s easier.

Punks!

So far no spasms with power, BUT...over the weekend went to NJ w/the Wife. She tries to call her sister on the way, has to push the steering wheel control button 4 or 5 times to get a phone response. Okay, she wasn't pushing it right or something (so I like to think). Today, all of the controls are lost. Waiting for it to get dark to see if they even illuminate. Horn works, sticks, but works. cruise cntrl works fine, fuses are good. I have no idea why this car is possessed.

Wife's back to NJ 'till Monday, just hope the demon doesn't migrate anywhere else, or all over. Waiting to see if they have a magic cure (reset), or if they want it dropped off Mon night or Tues morning, have a loaner ready for her. I do wish I didn't like good VW's as much as I do, but I want to step up to an A6, same car - some different parts, higher end I'm hoping.

My driver side airbag is turned OFF. It was that way when I bought it my B6 2006. I only learned the Takata Airbag replacement was not available after buying the car. This is the largest recall in the history of the world, and dealers

I don't think VW really cares anymore. Because of VWoA... maybe? I'm not done poking back at VW, heels are dug in for the msrp credit they offered.

Heh. What if you owned a honda? Or maybe the other millions of cars that have recalled airbags. Bagging on VW for that airbag they didn't make? I got my recall notice on my CC. Big deal. When it's ready, I'll get it done. Will I stop driving it? Nope.
guy, if I owned a Honda, maybe I wouldn't be so pissed off. Maybe I'd still be heading for 205k miles for a $110.00 timing belt/h2o pump change ! 110k. At 23k on the vw and it's been at A (2 total) dealer for almost half of the time I've owned it?

vw notify anyone on the 2016 auto-breaking/steering concerns that are out there? I'm still waiting for vw to honor their offer for compensation.
