overkill, yes, but it's a volvo!

i'm surprised that they mention changing a tire on the freeway, yuck!

make sure the credit card is not expired (e.g. "nothing to lose").

i keep a roll of hundreds and a sat-phone next to my piece in the arm-rest, but that's just me.

Who else found the shameless plug at the bottom amusing? Like they needed to rationalize it or something. :p

I carry the following:
1 Swiss Army knife
1 Honkin' big Maglite
4 30 minute Road flares
1 First Aid Kit
1 4' x 4' sheet of heavy plastic (in case I need to work on wet ground)
1 Can of Stoner's Glass Cleaner
1 partially used roll of paper towels
1 state and 1 local map
Couple of hand tools wrapped in a towel.

Everything fits into the various compartments in the wayback of our wagon (knife is in the glove box, along with the maps). Nothing is visible from outside, nothing rolls around and makes noise, and nothing eats into the luggage space.

I'm surprised fire extinguishers aren't among recommended items. But then again, it probably wouldn't be safe to let people think they could effectively fight a car fire.

Now the other things I can understand but why you would need antibacterial soup I can't fathom!
See I broke the first rule. Never dip into survival supplies unless in emergency. But I only did it to make sure the Jack did not go bad, then once I opened the bottle I thought that maybe it was time to rotate the supplies so they stay fresh. Then I typed. Tomorrow I have to go to liquor store and replenish. I hope I will not have an emergency between now and then.

I pretty much have standard stuffs in my car: maps, tools, jumper cable, flash, first-aid, etc.

Adding to that, I have: electric air pump, multimeter.

For VW only: an extra coilpack!
