I've got an intermittent problem with the radio I've noticed a couple of days ago. Sometimes when starting off traveling somewhere it would turn on but there would be no sound. I'll turn it off and then try again later and somtimes it would work for the rest of the day. Any suggestions to start looking. Amp or wiring?

2003 Passat GLX V6 - Monsoon with Amp in the back

VCDS scan shows:
Fault 00823 Line-Output 44-00 Short Circuit
Fault 00856 Radio Antenna - Open Circuit

I've also got a line in from Blitz if that's useful info to add.

This is likely the cause of your no sound condition. Hard to say whether the fault is with the RCA "patch cord" between head unit and amp, or a problem with the RCA jacks at either end of the patch cord.

Depending on what you find at either end of the patch cord when disconnecting it, you might try a different patch cord if everything looks OK on the head unit and amp.

Try unplugging the RCA's on the amp and head unit. They could be dirty, corroded or come loose. Jiggle them around to see if you can re create the issue. Do the same with the other connectors on the amp and head.

If this doesn't help ^^ I would then look at the wire harness that go through the door pillars. Check for broken/pinched wires. Seem to be a common source for intermittent sound.

As Electron Man suggested. If it looks like it's a faulty patch cord. Buy one that's long enough and temporary plug it in to the amp and head. If that corrects your issue then install the new one.
