I was talking to a mechanic about building a custom exhaust for my v6 b5.5. He is a "vw specialist" and claims mods like a chip, an exhaust, and an intake don't really help much/aren't worth the money for the v6. I guess implying the motor to already be optimized, which doesn't sound right to me.

I wanted a hi-flow cat with a custom catback to replace the stock with the hidden tips, maybe a chip(which, does anyone even have), and a cai. Maybe a set of cams.
Are these worth it and provide a noticable difference? Or should I just get a new muffler to the stock cat and save for a SC or turbo kit one day in the distant future?

Modifying the 4cyl 1.8T I know is easy to build big numbers, that makes sense... but I'd have thought a v6 would be the same, if not easier.

Comments, advice?
Thanks!

The 1.8T has heavily software driven engine management. So a 'chip' sort of un-governs the engine and lets uses the more of the boost/ potential of the turbo. The CAI is arguable- Theres no real-world evidence it does anything at all unless the intake it heavily modded, but sounds cool!
Basically the 'bolt ons' are already present on the 1.8t: VW put a turbo on it!
With the V6 they made it reliable and left it up to you to spend some $ on the bolts ons.
So, I have no experience here, but basic hot-rodding says to pep up that V6:
CAMS: yes!
Turbo: Yes!
The chip doesn't do much without those 2!
Now? chip: yes!
Exaust: yes!

Look at what Audi has been doing with the same base V6 engine for 10+ years- twin turbos, 3.0L etc 6 speed. But then...you gotta wonder where you stand with that awesome engine pushing a 4000lb wagon down the road. :)
Google " Racetaxi " and follow their lead!

yea, the v6 was made to the best of it's potential. pumping out just about 200 ponies with the torque curve it has on 2.8 liters is no small task, mind you.

there really isn't much you can do there, except for forced induction.

exhaust won't really help you... AT ALL, as the exhaust system has so much free slack, there isn't going to be any backpressure that will practically inhibit more power.

your only real option is a bolt-on supercharger, or the 2.7tt bolt-ons, leaving the ATQ naturally aspirated cams (very close to rs4 cam profile, form what i hear)

No exhaust, got it. I just thought the stock was restrictive, especially the cat that is. I guess not. N then zero says chip won't do much without high power mods.
ATQ cams? What are those, stock? 2.7tt, tt=techtonics?

I have lots of research to do, ha... sorry for so many questions/bein so nooby. I will be a vw/passat pro one day! :)

Hi this thread is relevant to my current situation,
I was wondering if a turbo could be put on the v6 4mo auto
Ive heard that even if a kit was made there is no chip for the tranny to actually take advantage of the turbo.
Am I way off base here?
thx.

No, and in the future you should start a new thread if you want to ask a new question rather than posting it in this thread. Your comments will usually be deleted by the mods, and it makes the thread very confusing for everyone to read. :wrench:

2.6tt = twin turbo. the audi motor. it's for the most part the same motor in most of the sense, just the head is a bit different. it also has different internals as well. beefy.

You can add headers and a full exhaust and the car will make more power. A chip can be tuned for this setup and it is quite a bit quicker than stock. It is also probably not worth the cost involved (the headers are expensive and hard to install).

A supercharger is your best bet. They can be had for about $2K used.

As far as I know the supersprint headers are near impossible to get in the US

supercharge it bro!! and tell me where u find a chip for the v6. cant seem to find one either.
Lots of places have them but if your really willing to spend $500 for little to no power gains then go for it... as stated before VW built the 2.8 to its fullest potential...

you can get them. they aren't the easiest thing to find, but there is no short supply. worst comes to worst, you can just buy direct from supersprint themselves.

but like Pz says, they are NOT fun to install... the original mani is bad enough as it is.

Speedtuning USA ( http://www.speedtuningusa.com )has a V6 chip for around 250 ( have seen it on ebay once for 150 stright from them) . I looked around awhile back and I believe they claim the highest HP output (213HP/309Tor) of all 6V chips.
309nm = 227lbft 16lbft over stock
