I'd feel really humiliated about this if I were a statie. How can they be expected to go after chipped 1.8T Passats with a 4.6 liter beast that is actually getting slower? Hell, I think my UNchipped Passat could toast a Ford 'interceptor'.

And check out the Impala! 9.2 seconds to 60! It's like they're all in some kind of slow contest. What gives? :???:

haha, yeah the Motorola can call the Bear in the Air. :)

But the CHP has BMW motorcycles and some Mustangs, too.
There have been some interesting stories in how PD's justify the BMWs.
But Mustangs and Camaros also get better mileage than big cruisers.

edit: got rid of the big picture cuz it screwed up the page. :)

Didn't see gone in 60 seconds? 8) "This is an A-star sir, not an Apache"

FWIW I believe a lot of those helicopters, especially the slightly older ones, aren't all that fast - their big advantage is not being bound by roads.

A lot of agencies in Europe are using sport bikes as their persuit vehicles

Just to be clear, it would never occur to me to flee and I have superb pulled-over ettiquette (interior lights on, keys resting on the dashboard).

I was just thinking, if a baddie had a car only as fast as a Passat, it would be faster than an interceptor, and I can't imagine the police are real happy with that. 4.6 liters, jeez...Kenny Brown tuning should be able to come up with something better for those guys.

Yeah the Fords are a little slow. The newer 2002 and 2003's are not to bad though. The old Chevy Caprice was the best, Corvette LT1 engine in them... now those had power. Ford does have some tricks up their sleve with a new cop car, but no word when that might be out. The rumors have it that it will be upwards of 300 hp and maybe out around 2007.

The new Interceptor Crown Vic is supposed to have independent suspension at all four corners, four valves per cylinder, and yes, hopefully 300+hp. The current 'Vic is governed to help reliability issues. The biggest weak link in the car remains the E4OD transmission. Slower than the old Caprice, but still outhandles it by far.

The BMW motorcycle is poorly suited to high speed pursuits. Because of the added weight, the bike has been geared down to improve acceleration, producing a top speed of just 115mph. Sure gets there fast, though.

The pursuit Camaros, on the other hand, are pretty wicked. 6-point roll cage, SS engine, six speed, with the Z28 handling package in an otherwise bare bones car. Good for 165+++mph. Also usually driven by someone with a few stripes on his shoulder. You're not getting away from this fella.

But really, anything with lights and a siren works fine as a pursuit vehicle. Most people dumb enough to flee are usually ill equipped for doing a good job of it, and all too often attempt to do so long after their license plate has been called in. I mean, it doesn't take much to catch a crack addict in an Escort maxed out at 80mph down the 110. I think current pursuit methodology is to just follow them until they run out of gas.

You know, the weird thing is I had a '92 Crown Vic LX (is that a P74?) and it seems to me it did 0-60 in about 8-8.5 seconds. Since then they've added about ~45 HP and a similar increase in torque. So how does that wind up slower? It can't be additional weight. Did Michigan make these performance stats up?

We have Caprices and Crown Vics (Interceptors).

By a seat-of-the-pants dyno the Caprice is faster off the line and probably all the way to 70. But, the Caprice is a hog and the Crown Vic handles much better.

Both would get waxed in all form of performance measures by my Passat.

Most of this is Mute...most Law Enforcement agencies aren't allowed to pursue over 100mph. That's why the have radios and call ahead for road blocks or road spikes...things of that sort. When I lived in San Diego and one of my wife's VERY good friends was a CHP in LA (now out in Needles...was on the scene for Sam Kineson's death) his crown vic easily went over 115 (pretty quickly). It's amazing what the police can get away with just because they can.
Side note top speed for an US Navy SH-60B (Seahawk) is 250KTs and a Bell Jet Ranger's top speed is more in the 130KT range. Like alluded to before no roads makes it a little easier.

Sure, but it seems to me shortening the time to simply catch up is far more critical than top speed. If the bad guy is going fast enough, the cop may have no chance of catching up enough to get the plate number, and then the bad guy can bail at some exit. So I would've thought they'd want a car with a little more punch.

Man, the most dramatic police chase I ever saw, those guys were going WELL over 100. It was on I-93 N in MA at about 2 AM. First, I saw these headlights in my rear view mirror. They were sort of bouncing up and down strangely and coming up fast. A couple moments later this Porsche 944 flew by at what must have been *at least* 130. The car was going so fast that whenever it hit irregularities in the road it was slamming down hard on its bump stops, that explained the funny bouncing of the headlights....

Literally 2 minutes later, 2 Mass state police cruisers went flying by (and incredibly they were drafting each other, less than 1 car length between them), but they were not going quite as fast as the Porsche. They had a huge hard-on to get that guy, but I sort of doubt they ever got him.

Plus, I'm thinking using helicopters is pretty much California -only. They've got at least 1 chopper airborne at any given time over LA, whereas in places like Mass, they'd have to scramble one and by that time most bad guys would be having sirloin tips over rice at the '99'.

Funny stories.
There was a website serving SoCal that would page its members whenever a car chase was being televised locally. True!
I saw the guy that created the website interviewed on the local news about two years ago, but I can't find the site anymore.

There was a car chase here about 2 months ago where the guys ditched into an apartment complex on foot and got away.
The helicopters (news and police) lost track of them as they ran through the complex and the patrol cars were too far behind because they were trying to stay safe.

That's pretty rare, but normally motorcycles probably have the best chance to get away.

Remember the video where the motorcycle came off a freeway off-ramp at about 60mph and ran right into the side of a bus? Ouch.

Troopers here (NC) have some serious-looking Camaros. I don't think they feel left out. They used to have a lot of 5.0 Mustangs.

CHP has Camaro's Now... I see them all the time on my drive from Davis to SF and back.. They are scary bc of how fast they go.. I will see them doing 90-100MPH in the highway, and once seen them on what looked like a call bc they passed me up at well over 100MPH while i was going around 95 (it was 3am and i was coming back from a party)
Rule of thumb, dont go faster then them and you are good...
