On my 2005 passat GLX - 4 motion with Audi V6

I replaced my right headlight yesterday so I had to remove the black plastic housing for what I assume is the air.

There is what appears to be a fine screen mesh filter under there.

This is directly to the rear of where the head light cap is.

I do not know what it is supposed to look like and I did not take a picture. It was snowing so I was in a rush ( I am in Michigan ).

I am really looking for a photo of a healthy clean air box.

It was dirty and had some bugs and sand in it. So i just blew a lot of it out with my own breath.

It looks as if there is quite a lot of dirt on the mesh or it is just very fine.

Is there a source that provides a photo of either a dirty or clean filter ?

It does not look like it is replaceable like other filters.

Can that mesh be cleaned ?

Sorry for lack of description and this is my first VW.

Thank you

Yes it is a very fine mesh screen and it's purpose other than a bug and dirt catcher is to keep snow out of the air box in cold weather climates.

Yes it can be cleaned, but be gentle.

To remove the screen you first need to remove the top cover of the air box and remove the air filter.

Then inside the air box on the side of the screen's frame closest to the front of the car is a small phillips screw that keeps the screen in place.

Remove the screw and pull the screen up to remove.

Note how it is keyed into it's holder as you pull it out, just makes it easier when you re-install.

To clean just rinse with water and a mild soap or AP cleaner and a soft toothbrush if needed.

Remembering to be gentle.

In addition to being fragile, the screen is irreplaceable. VW doesn't sell them separately; you have to purchase the entire airbox. On the bright side, a lot of people do without - my VW dealer simply discards them if too dirty or torn.

I replaced mine with some galvanized screen, the kind that is used under plaster wall construction. I fitted it from the inside of the screen holder and glued it in place, with one zip tie at the middle brace. Works like a charm and keeps critters out of the air filter without needing to vacuum the stupid snow filter so often.
