I recently had my whole front end redone. I have a 99 2.8 passat. My mechanic said he didnt like the way the strut fit in the spring on the struts I brought. Recently I hear a very very loud bang or pop sound and he says he feel like its the strut getting in a bind. Does anyone have a diagram of the proper way the strut is to go into the spring? Or a idea what elese it might be? I have every control arm new, both inner and outer tierods and new struts. New strut mount ( Rubber donut?)

Make sure the single nut that holds the shaft of the shock at the top of the upper mount is tightened down all the way. I had the same issue when I replaces mine and when I took it off that was the issues.

Make sure all related nuts and bolts are tight and that the top part of the entire assembly (bolts to the car itself under the hood) is tight.

If memory serves me correctly. There really isn't a wrong way to install the shock itself.

If a mechanic wasn't comfortable with it, then something isn't right or they are inept. What shocks did you buy? Model numbers would help. There really isn't much to installing one. the spring seat has a stop where the end of the spring butts up to on top and bottom. As jjpark said, it could be that top nut. It drives people crazy.

Where in the US are you located? Maybe a member could assist. It's pretty easy to R&R one and should only take a 1/2 hour to pull it, compress the spring to tighten the top nut and put it back in.

Agree with jjpark, I just had a popping sound like that on my wife's SUV. The upper mount had torn through, leaving a washer-like ring under that top nut.

Of course, I then made the mistake of jacking it up to see what had happened and the spring forced the wheel down, nearly tearing the axle boot. Pulled out the spring, then three of us lifted the wheel and forced the shock back into position. Vice-grips replaced the top nut and a block of wood replaced the spring, just so we could roll it onto a flatbed.

I'm in eastern North Carolina. What is the torq on the top nut? I got a cheap strut off rockauto Stenson I think

Never saw a rating because it should be a nylock nut. Just tighten till it bottoms out on the threads.

The top of the shaft should either have a female hex or it will be flat on two sides. You will need the appropriate sized wrench or hex key to hold the shaft and the appropriate wrench to tighten the bolt down. Compress the spring 1st or you will never get the nut on/ tightened correctly.
