Most of the Passat engines did not use a gasket on the oil pan. Anything 2001 and later did not (from what I have seen). I don't know about Loctite 518, but I have used multiple sealants to make oil pan gaskets on VW, Audi, Honda and Subaru. If it says it is good for oil pans and you follow the instructions, it should work.

I have had excellant results using Permatex brand p/n 80697 copper hi temp spray on my gaskets, transmission and oil pan. Not for use on rubber gaskets like valve covers, etc. two or three coats ,dried in between works primo. It's thickness adds some compliance, doesn't harden, and although tacky allows repositioning, NO mess or goop migration asssociated with "gasket" in a tube, perfect application. Plus no hardening or nuggets associated with tube products. Besides auto stores ,have seen carried in Walmart. Also bought a couple long 6 mm bolts(4), cut off heads and partially threaded into block allowing gasket to be "piloted" first ,then pan into position then adding pan bolts as I go. Always fear especially on the 1.8's, of rtv "nuggets" flipping off and migrating to the oil pickup screen, sad enough set up as it is.

with no gasket,as on later engines ,518 is adequate and for aluminum applications, loctite's product number 5699 is more oil resistent, but I have had the best success with "reinzosil" gasket maker/sealant. It and the 5699 seem identical in characteristics.
