Has anyone had this problem? when I lock my doors on my 2001.5 Passat with remote the horn sounds once and the tail lights and side marker lights flash once then go off. This is what us supposed to happen. Now when I lock the car with the remote the drivers tail light and side light remain on even though the doors have locked. The passenger tail light and side light flash once then go out as it should but the drivers tail light and side light remain on. I have to open it and close it several times before the drivers tail light and side light will go out.

This is driving me crazy....Any ideas what is causing this ???

It sounds like the German parking light mode where the lights are left on to prevent someone else from running into your parked car on a dimly lit road. IIRC on a Porsche, the turn signal stalk is left in the activated left or right position when the car is turned off for this feature to work. Not sure if VW uses some other method. Have you checked the owners' manual?

I bought the car brand new and have never had this problem in 11 years. Only the left tail light and left side light stays on and they never shut off as I did not notice it once and the lights were on for 2 hours. Good thing I came back early. I have to lock and unlock it several times before the lights go out.

I have had this very same issue. It is very intermittent though. I have not been able to figure it out. It always seemed to act up the worst during the warmest part of the summer (had the problem for a couple years)
If you figure it out, please share what you did to fix it. It is very irritating when you have to unlock and lock the car a dozen times to get it right and you're running late for work.

What scares me is that I will lock the car and not notice the lights are on and then I will get a dead battery a few days later if I were to leave it in the garage for the weekend.

I went back and found my pinout diagram of the CCM. I thought it might show which wires from the CCM control the exterior lights. If you look just below the yellow highlight (that was for my alarm troubleshooting thread, so ignore that), you will see two wires called "Exterior Lights System" (pinouts 13&14 on the 15-pin CCM connector). I have no idea if these lines are potential culprits. But, is it possible that you guys have water damage near the CCM, possibly on these two lines? BTW, if the system behaves different when it's hot out, that's a telltale sign of an expanding cracked solder joint, or expanding damaged wire, making/losing a connection. The intermittent behavior, after several tries, supports this theory too. It could even be a bad solder joint on the PCB board, at those specific pins on the connector (once again, assuming those lines are related).

Yes it could be related to this. Thanks for the schematic. Off hand does anyone know how much a CCM costs???

I thought it may also be a relay going bad. Do you know if they are any relays in the tail lights or side lights that could be stuck on or off which is why you have to lock and unlock it several times?? The other thing that has me going is only the left side is on. The right side lights go off.

The guy in the other thread just got a CCM for $35.

I would also be investigating what the "Exterior Lights System" may be ... perhaps another module located under the dash or something?? If there is a relay or fuse, I would expect it to be co-located. Just guessing of course.

Have you inspected your CCM yet? If not, I would definitely pull up the trim/carpet and do that right away. It is pretty easy to get to.

I think I found the likely cause of your problem!! And it appears directly related to those Exterior Lights lines (and possibly the internal relay INSIDE the CCM). Read the entire thread.

The "sticky" relay in the above post is exactly why I was suggesting that the CCM needs replaced. Replacing the relay itself is not much of a problem, IF you have some soldering skills and decent soldering equipment. There are several vendors that you can source the relay from, but you need to know how to search their sites and narrow down what you're looking for. Jameco, Mouser, Parts Express, Newark, and Digikey (among others) are all potential sources that are known to be reputable.

There is no additional module for the "exterior lights system" - that is simply referring to the turn signals in this case. The CCM directly feeds the turn signals for the alarm blink. 2 outputs- 1 for the left side, and 1 for the right side.

Yes I think that could be it as I have already replaced the relay on the dashboard last year due to a blinker problem. I suspected it may be a relay but did not know where it could be. I'm very confident this is the problem. I will fisrt try to order some of these relalys and replace it anyway.

Thanks so much for helping me trace this problem :)
