Hey everyone

im doing a little R&D for my car and one of the things i was looking to add would be a radar detector in my car

since its not allowed where i live but i frequently travel out of the state where it is allowed

i was thinking of permintly wiring it into the grill or something to that effect and have a simple led flash on the dash when it spoted something

any suggestions

and more importanly

any examples of one being installed in a B5

You can get a wireless one so if you get pulled over, you just move it. You can also put it above the sun visor, so the cop can't see it at the angle he's at (behind you or standing next to your window). If you put it in the grill, you wouldnt get their signal from the rear or the sides.
This is just what I know, I'd be interested to hear if there was a way to do this.

I wonder if that is reliable at all? Interesting, but doesn't seem worth it to dish out a grand when you'd have to be pulled over 14 times just for it to be worth it.

I would trust it just as well as their other radar detectors but i wouldn't say it is worth the price, but hey aome people have that kind of money burning a hole in their pockets so if they want them then more power to them.

We went through this recently I think.. Though, it was a Valentine one debate vs K40

You can infact purchase a k40 stealth radar detector...and If installed correctly, you will have 360 degree coverage. There is a small flush mounted knob under teh dash someplace, that has an innner and outer ring. one for city/highway,. the other is Volume. a small 2" x 2" speaker is hidden under the dash.

You can integrate the k40 stealth with the laser jammer, which I have.

Only, I made the right choice, and use it with a Valentine one. Its about 1/2 the price of the k40, and a much better unit. I even drive in CT. with it all the time, never had a problem ( knock on wood) Another nice thing with k40 is the free software upgrades. As techn9logy changes, they upgrade you...The k40 will be obsolete in a few years, if that matters to you at all.

The install of the k40 is nice and clean, but not worth the big $ if you ask me.

My philosophy is that if you speed don't complain if you get caught. Pay the fine! Radar detectors only encourage you to speed more.

A friend of mine was so happy when he got a ticket going 80 mph. I thought he was insane but then he told me if he hadn't had a radar detector he would of been caught going 95 mph!

If you live where they are not allowed then you have to make sure you get one at least good enought to not be detected by the cops. Otherwise they'll just pull you over anyway.

Mine's hardwired to the fusebox and mounted a few inches to the right of my rear view mirror. I just lower the passenger visor to mask the magic :D

If you are handy with tools, and daring, probably the best set up would be a Valentine installed in the center rear head rest, and a remote display over the speedo, under the overhang.

I have a V-1 in my GTI, hanging from the rear trim, just forward and barely below the center brake light. I have 35% tint, and although visable, the unit is not recognizable, and not really noticable.

I've thought about cutting a rectangle of leather (leaving the top un-cut), flipping it up, and cutting a piece of the headrest out. Cutting a square of leather out of the front of the headrest, and closing the flap over the unit, removing only enough to expose the anetnni to the rear.

Some kid on AudiWorld took a Valentine 1 apart - he put one part in front (inside the grille), one part in the rear (in the keyhole), wired it up and has the display in his driver's side vent... If anyone else has seen this... I can't manage to dig out that thread... That's what I would do...

-I used this site, basically they test and rate radar guns, Radar Roy (in pic) is an ex-cop who does the testing. I read their reviews and eventually bought the Escort 8500, got it shipped right on time, and it works so well, that sometimes it'll warn me...i'll be on high alert...not see anything...calm down..then see the cop, it detects that far away!

Speak to Linda Scheffy at this link. She has to be one of the foremost experts I've ever spoken to on the subject. I currently have the V1 (saved my a$$ numerous times) and along with the Twin Blinder (laser Jammer) which saved me when I was barreling down the highway 85 mph plus. They don't deal in the b.s. stuff (manufacturers that make untrue claims about their own products). They have different packages and are pricey but I suppose that for the stealth setup that you want you will have to come out of pocket.

I can only recommend the V1...

It is a wonderful unit that has saved me on many occasions...it's bogey counter and directional arrows are very imformative...

I have my one hardwired beside the rear view mirror, power cable is running to the fusebox (using the rear wiper fuse)...I also have the remote unit, I am going to fit this inside the ashtray...

I personally find that the radar detector makes me more aware of the road...

If you go to www.valentine1.com click "ask mike", then "answered already" then "hidden detectors" you will find useful info about this subject. Mike Valentine himself says it would cost him big bucks to design a V-1 with seperated antenni.

Many radar detectors market themselves as invisible to radar detector detectors (RDDs). Apparently, that's only true of the VG-2 RDD. There's a new RDD that can sniff out any radar detector. See www.speedzones.com for more info. So if you live in Virginia or DC, think twice about using your new radar detector.

ALEX - Thanks for the Motor Trend link!

JOSHMAN - You know radar detectors are no longer illegal in Connecticut, right?

I am not a bonified EE (yet) since my lack of real world circuit theory but I will let out this warning: cutting apart a radar detector to put some of it here and some of it there will diminish the unit's effectiveness. If you plan to have a remote location of your radar detector (that is, other than the front/rear windscreen) a specially designed unit will be needed.

I read an article on this and it has to do with the extra length of wiring necessary to connect the now seperated parts. This wiring introduces parameters not originally designed for creating aproduct that will not work as intended; and in most cases worse. So becareful cutting things up and putting pieces here and there.

I checked out a Suburban before with a behind the grill radar mount. It was K40 brand. The owner said it worked like a charm. There are many websites with slick, working installs. Check ebay if you want to save some money on the components as the labor is commonly a big part of the price.

A few of the above sites will get ya started on the right foot. One thing, Rocky Mountain Radar.. don't buy. Bogus claims out the whazoo. Get one that is tested rigourosly. V1 and the Bel are the top dogs.

Good luck with this. Next time I can get any money together a V1 is going to be my investment. I have become a more spirited driver, taking advantage of the autobahn blood of our cars. Unfortunately I85 is not the autobahn.
