M1 5W-30 is not VW approved 502 00 oil but 0W-40 is. VW also recommends 5W-40 oil, not 5W-30 which is too thin for B5/B5.5 in most applications.

I've been using Mobil 1 5w-30 in my 02 1.8T! My new Jetta with a 2.0T takes Castrol 5W-40. Should I switch to the 5W-40 also in the Passat ??

I've only seen Castrol 5w-30 at Walmart - they also have Mobil 1 5w-30. They don't have 5w-40 or 0w-40 - these I can only find at the auto stores and are $6 to $7 /quart. I run the Castrol 5w-40 in my new jetta that has a 2.0T and use the Mobil 1 0w-40 in my Mercedes C280 which is the oil they recommend. On my 02 Passat with 143K miles, I have been running the Mobil 1 5w-30 but think now I better switch to the 0w-40.

That's probably a good idea, as M1 5W30 is not one of the VW approved oils, I always check to make sure the container says VW 502.00 approved on it. AFAIK, M1 0w40 is approved, as well as castrol syntec 5w40.... For a list of the MANY other approved oils, do a search- I have seen hundreds of threads listing them here.... I know the v6's can be a little more forgiving, but the turbo engines risk sludge with the wrong oil.

Most walmarts do not carry castrol 5W40 but do have mobil1 0W40 in qt bottles only. If you're looking for approved oil for good price, I would wait for the oil special they have at advance, pepboys.

if you have a Walmart near by there usually like $22.00 or less for the Mobil1:thumbup:
my local wally world has it on sale for $21/gallon.

This also included Turbo Diesel Truck (5w40).

But... since the local one only had a gallon....

I bought Shell Rotella T-6 5w40 instead.

Both are excellent oils, even though it's not certified by VW for 502.00

a local hardware store (Benny's, for those in New England) now has Mobil 1 on sale for 19.99 a gallon. I bought 10 gallons of 5w30!

When my stock of M1 5W-40 Turbodiesel/Truck oil runs out (can only find it in quarts [$7/ea.] these days), I'm gonna check out the Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic...WalMart has it for ~$20/gal.

When I take my car to midas I don't tell them what to put they just do it.
If 5w30s is not VW approved why do they put it in my car?

lol
That is your first problem. Taking it to midas and other general shops that don't specialize in VAG's

I can't defend M1 5w30 because I don't use it.

I use heavy duty diesel oil (synthetic 5w40) because of the more robust additive package

I took it to midas because barely any other places around can even do an oil change for a vw...
any old vw is painfully easy to do...

with the one exception of the 1.8t, where shops likely let it drip then spray a can of brake cleaner down the side of the block to clean it up.
