I know my secondary air compressor is failing. I get a CEL (emissions Workshop) once and a while plus it sounds like a jet taking off on some starts. I have a trip to the beach planned for Monday. As far as I know this just runs when the engine is warming up...am I wrong? If so what do you think about running it to the beach before getting a new one?

Is this a do it yourself job?

I work on VWs for a living. I've replaced some.

You can do it yourself.

Keep in mind that if the pump is making noise, most of the time it is because the Kombi valve has failed and lets some exhaust back through the piping down to the pump. Condensation forms, and eats the bearings if not filling the pump completely with water.

If you pull the hose at the pump going up to the Kombi valve and it smells like exhaust AT ALL, you need both a pump AND a valve.
