I buy the Mobil-1 10W-30 because is what is available in Phoenix, AZ. The 1999 Passat V6 Owners Manual recommends 10W-30 for warm weather, and 5W-30 for cold weather.

From reading some of the posts, I get the impression that Mobil-1 10W-30 is incorrect for the Passat V-6. I've never seen Mobil-1 0W-30.

What is going on here?

The 30 is the important number: warm viscosity. Living in phoenix, you probably don't see a whole lot of cold weather, so there is less demand for 5W- and 0W- weight oils. Valvoline makes a synthetic 5w30 -- can you find that oil in phoenix? (IIRC the valvoline synpower meets VW 502.00)

If I lived in Phoenix or Las Vegas, I would want a 40-weight oil at least 9 months out of the year. You cannot go wrong with Mobil1 0W-40 (my personal choice) or with any of the 5W-40 oils on the 502 list. IF there were a 10W-40 oil with 502 certification, that would also be an excellent choice, particularly during the warmer months of the year.

As I have mentioned elsewhere, the Mobil1 xW-30 oils are almost light enough to be rated as 20-weights, great if you have a new Ford or Honda, not so great if you drive a VW / Audi.

Running regular synthetic with the oil capacity of the V6..... I don't think there's any problem using it but 0w40 costs same as others so I would stick with VW approved oil.
