hey all,
Its been a while since I've posted here. I think the time has come to let the Passat go....
2002 VW Passat Wagon GLX 4 Motion, 173,000ish miles, Navy Blue with Black Interior.
Way back around the 4th of July I was driving home and entering the turnpike on ramp....which was a curved down ramp. Experience a shock to the car so hard I thought I must have hit a crater in the road. Proceeded to get on the turnpike and car drove normally, so I didn't think much of it. Then when I exited the turnpike (PA) I again experienced the hard downshifts (what I figured them to be) in normal stop and go traffic. I had 5 total shift events so hard I thought the tranny was going to fall out of the car, the entire vehicle shook. On the last event the check engine light triggered and the engine began to run very rough. I was worried I may not make it home. I eventually made it home, and investigated the next day. The car stalled twice in the neighborhood and I limped it back home were it sat patiently until yesterday. I started the car which I do occasionally to keep battery in working order etc, and was greeted with a 'alternator workshop' message, fantastic I cant do basic troubleshooting with out a solid electrical system base. Among the ton (16) of engine codes generated by a weak electrical system I found:
Address 02: Auto Trans Labels: 01V-927-156.lbl
Part No: 3B0 927 156 AD
Component: AG5 01V 2.8l5V USA 3939
Coding: 00102
Shop #: WSC 05311
VCID: 68D14D8208B5510A7D-513C
1 Fault Found:
18265 - Load Signal
P1857 - 35-00 - Error Message from ECU
Besides that tranny code nothing else of major concern. I've read the hard shifts can be a failed/failing MAF, but with out replacing the alternator is just a guess at this point. I've already replaced the alternator once before on this car.
Summary of issues: (Cons)
1) Alternator (second failure)
2) Presumed Tranny issues (also whined like a supercharger for a few years)
3) Needs a new heater core (nursed for a loooong time with yearly backflush to get me thru winters)
4) Occasional sunroof leak
5) Transmission probably never serviced, I know I didn't change any fluids in the 45k miles I drove it.
Pros:
1) Generally runs and drives well
2) Brand new Brakes/Pads
3) Basically new tires
4) Generally good physical shape/condition
5) Drives like a tank in snow....like its not even there.
I think i'm probably going to list on craigslist/ebay/here as a parts car, with a preference to be sold as a whole car.
