I test drove an Evo VIII last night...*GASP!*

Jesus Christ that car is fast.

I'm in the market for another car right now (I've been looking for used 911's for months now), and I've never considered getting an Evolution VIII (or a Japanese car period), but a local dealership on Route 1 here in NJ has had a silver one and a red one on the lot for a good three-four weeks. I'm surprised they haven't been purchased yet.
Seeing these cars every day for the past few weeks finally got to me last night (they've been growing on me). After work, I went home and changed, waited for my girl, then her and I got something to eat, then went up to the dealership to check one out...

After the salesman tried to tell me things about this car that I already knew (most of which he had no clue what he was talking about, shocker there), we ended up taking out a used red 2004 on a test drive. Car had 5,2XX miles on it.

So I got in the driver's seat. I'm between 6'4" and 6'5" so right off the bat I noticed that I was a little tall, but once I sat in the seat (which was very comfortable, btw), I was better off.
Its headroom wasn't bad at all, but I was a bit legroom deficient even after scooting the seat all the way back. Whoever drove that car last must have been about 5'6", I thought, as the seat was really close when I sat down at first.

I looked at the dash and instruments right after I sat inside. Charcoal-ish/Gray two-tone interior. The steering wheel looked weird. Reminded me of a short, fat kid. The center console area was squared off a little too much. The radio and heat/AC controls were simple and straight-forward. The said simplicity of the forementioned things is fine by me considering the Evo VIII was not built to be a luxury car. That said, they still could have made the gauges a bit nicer looking. They were way too plain. Felt like I was in a regular Lancer.

Started the thing up... Damn, sounds nice. Holy s#!t, I guess this isn't a regular Lancer! Mean sounding, but not too mean. Subtle mean, if you will. Went to reverse the car. DAMN THAT'S A HUGE WING! Saw that thing out of the rear window when I turned around and I was like, ... It didn't seem to be in the way though as it's tall enough to be out of the way, actually (if that makes sense).

Got to Route 1, salesman says we're gonna turn around immediately. I went up and did so. Didn't feel TOO much power as I accelerated out of the dealership at about 33% throttle, but I felt a lot of grip. (And I mean A LOT.)

Turned around, started going back down Route 1 (bumpy as hell for those of you who know), didn't feel so bad though. I expected the ride to be more rough than it was.

Finally got the car to an open part of Rt. 1. So I'm at a stoplight and it turns green so I give it a little gas to get started. (Don't want to take off like an asshole). I got to about 3k RPM and gave it about 80-90% throttle and it felt like God himself kicked the car in the ass.
Before the acceleration even registered in my brain, I was shifting into second. Got into second and gave it 100% throttle and I was GONE. I mean, GONE. The Evo sounds like it's unleashing something really wild when you get on it. Nice sound.
I hit third, accelerated for a little bit, then remembered that I had a salesman still in the car and that I was doing 80 in a 55 so I reluctantly slowed down. All of that took less than ten seconds, mind you. :weirdo:

I felt just a touch of lag down low and between shifts, but in the mid-to-upper RPM range, the Evo makes you forget about that by being faster than hell. I still can't get over how much grip it had.

So the dealership wants $31k for it. The only things that are holding me back is the lack of legroom and the boy-racer look it has to it. (But those are two BIG things.) I wish I could take it out on a longer test drive to see how comfortable it is on say, an hour drive.

I've driven some fast cars, but the Evo is right up there. I felt like I could take that car right off of the road and onto a track. I think I might go back for another test drive today. :D

Anyone here own one? Does $31k seem a bit high?

now, for comparison, you should go drive an STi and an R32.

for my tastes and needs... the STi won.
probably 5,2XX hard-driven miles.

why is there a used one of these with so little miles?? something to consider possibly. if it's a dealer demo, they're very hard miles (think roasted clutch, harsh running before coming up to temp, etc). if it was somebody's car that was traded in then they were probably also very tough miles.

sounds pretty bad-ass though! the car looks awesome. i'm definitely wanting of one!

I've never driven an STi or an R32, but I've driven a "regular" WRX that was slightly modded. The Evo was quite a bit faster, I think. I also remember being more cramped in the WRX. Dare I say that the Evo sounded much better, too.

I respect the STi, but there's something about the WRX's overall styling that I just don't like--even with the new ones. They're not the best-looking of cars. (In my opinion.)

Yeah, I was thinking about the mileage thing myself. I've known people who have just traded cars in after a few months simply because they didn't like them, but who knows what the full story behind this one is. I'd definitely find out before making a purchase.

Everything on it looked, felt, and performed well though.

I wonder what the maintenance schedule on an Evo VIII looks like? I bet they require a lot of maintenance since it's such a small motor producing so much power. I'll have to look into that ASAP...
The 4G63 is one of the most overbuilt blocks to come out of Japan, second only to the 2JZ-GTE, the 3.0L I-6 from the last generation Supra. I'd expect it to be "change your oil every 3k", and timing belt around 60k or something. And pick up on the minor things that break here and there, although you should be used to that already.

Btw, the wing on the Evolution IS an option. You could probably swap out the tails for some stock Lancer tails too if you really wanted.

Oh, is it that over-spec, stealth? I didn't know.

How much power do you think the 4G63 could produce before being as stressed as a 1 bar chipped 1.8T? Or is it already as stressed (relatively speaking) as a chipped 1.8T? Any idea?

Do those motors in the Evo have any signature problems like the 1.8T has signature coil pack and ICM problems?

Thanks. I need to be brought up-to-speed a bit on Japanese powerplants.

As far as the wing is concerned. I actually like it. Plus it sets the Evo apart from the Lancer even more.
I like the taillights too. Only on the Evo and the IS300 do I like "altezzas" though.

go pick up the new motor trend which has a one-year test on it. $100 oil change i think!
Bottom end is all cast bits, so there's still sensible limits. 300awhp on a dynojet for good reliability maybe? (or, 80ish more than stock) The nice part is that can be achieved on the stock turbo with engine management, exhaust, and a few other bits. Drivetrain bits become a bit of an issue around the same region but not too bad.
SD, email me...when is the next time your back in SD?
[email protected]
I have one in SD w/ about 340 to the wheels....
31k is WAY too high.

The MSRP '05 EVO I looked at in the San Antonio Car show was 28.5k BRAND NEW.

(sweet story BTW)

340 the to ground? Jesus. :p You can bet your ass I'll be emailing you when I'm back in San Diego. :D

What all did you do to it to acheive that?

Also, what PSI do they boost stock? I'm guessing @ 12? What is the HP/TQ gain after engine management and exhaust, I wonder? :suspicio:
I think stock boost is something like 16+ PSI ? Just a guesstimation from what I rememebr hearing a while back. And I agree with Spanky, 31k for a used one is way too high, brand new they might be around that price..
Agreed, 31k is way too high. I almost bought one at the beginning of the summer. I talked the salesguy down to invoice (27k+change) and he threw in a set of winter tires for free for a brand new 04 evo with less than 10 miles on it. I heard the prices are dropping even lower because the MR is out already, and the fact that they are not really selling all that well.

Evos are very nice cars. You get supercar performance for the price of an entry level lux. The main weak point seems to be the clutch. Mitsu claims it built its clutch weaker than the drivetrain so that dum dums that do 6000rpm drops wont break axles. The 4g63 motor is very mod friendly, and there is tremendous aftermarket support. They have a good forum going at www.evolutionm.net with pretty helpful guys.

I was very close to getting one, but then I found a 4g63 powered Eclipse for a steal that I couldn't pass up on.

Stock boost is set at 19psi, but it tapers off to around 15psi or so at redline.
Venshu has nice bolt on's....for $3-$6K they'll eat up a Z06. Wicked fast with all that traction. I'll need a car in 2 years, if the Mazda 6 hot rod comes out that may be the one to watch. It's got a more civilized base to start with.....

19 PSI stock? Jesus. What does it boost after the engine management software? 30? LOL.

Go test drive an R32 and STI. Different cars, but both equally fun.
You think the EVO is fast, drive the STI. The R32 isn't that fast, but the interior is great.
Also remember the Evo VIII MR is coming out. I think it is about 300 HP.
Not much more, just less taper at higher RPM, leaner fuel mix, ignition timing changes, and the exhaust mods are a big part of the extra power.

Very good advice. By the way, my R32 just had a visit from the TX GIAC rep over the weekend. Huge improvement in the mid-range power band.

Feels like a different car
