$100K for a Passat???!!! With that kindda money you buy Lamborghini not VW :D
In Australia, a Golf R costs 62K. They get paid a lot more, but the prices and taxes are much higher than the US. Free health care and college costs money.

Free health care
That's a scam. Nothing is free. They deduct health insurance premium from each pay check and provide lousy health services. You have to wait more than 8 hours to be admitted to the ER and specialists have a 6 months waiting list.

Cars cost about 2 - 3 times as much in Australia... a previous customer told me his folks paid $150k for an Audi S5. Puts things in perspective...

You wonder why this should be the case. Yes the transportation cost would add more to the price of imported cars but still it is outrageous what they are asking and even more strange is the willingness of people to pay those prices. In a free economy that lacks price fixing or cartels and mafia in the free market the competition should suppress the prices.
I think the biggest factors in Australia and Canada is lack of competition which causes the consumer suffer from unrealistically high prices. At least that's my observation from being in those countries many times.

Maybe in Australia its the case but free health does work in many countries without the contradiction you have posted. I know, i come from one of those countries.

I said if you are in a position to purchase the W8 and be able to take care of it, pull the trigger! I love sleeper car, they are my favorite, the sedan or wagon form. I have a couple at home in the Audi dept. and i love surprising people with them. I was actually just talking to my son about trying to find a W8 variant 6 speed and do that project together!

Good luck and i hope you get it!

No need to continue with this topic as it's not relevant to Passat repairs. But I summarize it for you in one single sentence: "Nothing free exists".
