I cut mine off just behind the bend, and touched up the cut with some paint. There is a hole in the door at about the bend (trim projection snaps into door), which I just left there. 12 years later, it is still fine. You don't see it if you aren't looking for it. Might be more obvious on your B5.5, since it has that chrome trim right above it -- the B5 just has the painted plastic piece. Cruise by a body shop, and see what they would charge to fix it.

Mine did the exact same thing except a piece of the chrome ripped off and the piece that is color matched is all wrinkly looking now.. SO UGLY.

I also glued the painted strip back on with some 5minute epoxy and it hasn't peeled off again after about a year.

I'm not sure if its worth replacing for me, I might just take them all off and get the car resprayed or plastidipped because I have been wanting to do it for awhile.

Same on my B5, happened about ten years ago. Like Attofarad, I just made a cleaner cut and touched it up with paint. I suppose the clearance between the doors is too small and if things move/stretch a bit, when you open the rear door the rub strip catches the front door edge. But it does seem more visible on B5.5 because of the chrome part.

They come with self-adhesive strips pre-attached, and locater pins that go into holes in the door. Remove the old trim and clean any adhesive remains with a solvent. After the new strips are painted and dry, remove the cover from the adhesive strips on the new ones, and press into place. Do it on a warm day.
