How long can I wait to transfer an api warranty? I need HELP

I have a 99 V6. Last night I posted that I had just gotten it towed to the dealer. The car stopped and I couldn't get it in gear although it starts beautifully. The dealer called today saying that the transmission fell apart and a piece came flying out and broke a hole in the case. I need a brand new transmission and it's going to cost me $4,100. Now, when I bought the car, used, in July the previous owner told me the extended warranty would automatically transfer to me since I was about to become the new owner. Dealer said "no way" and that he would get on the phone and call api to see if they would transfer me now. The dealer beat me to it, called me back and said api would transfer me for $50. When I called api, they basically told me I didn't have a snowflake's chance in Hell because I bought the car in July and they give 15 days to transfer warranties. I am cursing myself for not having known this information when I bought the car. I really just needed to vent, but can anyone tell me anything that might help? please????

That item should have been taken care of upon the sale of the car. If the dealer is willing to transfer the warranty for $50.00 then I would do so, instead of stressing! Hopefully you will be back on the road soon my friend!!

As I see it, you have just two choices:
1- Take the dealer up on transferring the warranty for you. Just make sure to get in writing from them that the effective date is the date you purchased the car or some other date prior to the date of trans failure. However, I wouldn't hold a lot faith in this working. The sale was a private party sale and the transaction did not involve the dealer. And since API is already aware of the situation, you may be out of luck anyway unless the dealer does business with API and can get the Rep involved.

2- Take it up with the person who sold you the car. It was that bozo who gave you bad information. Did Mr Bozo give you a copy of the warranty when you bought the car? If not, you may have some recourse.... not that I advocate lawsuits, but this person's error is going to cost you $4100.

Reality, it is always up to the purchaser to make sure he/she knows all the parameters of the sale. Every extended warranty company has a time limit for transferring of the coverage. Some will make minor allowances, but 7 months is a lot of latitude, especially when faced with a $4100 claim.

Good Luck!

If it comes down to you replacing the entire transmission, you might want to consider looking for an "salvaged" assembly...

I found a few at http://www.car-part.com ranging between 1 and 2 grand... ouch.

Your car is a '99 sedan V6 5 Speed Manual right?

I just had my clutch done because I thought for some strange reason I had worn it down at 53K. When my shop,Bergen Imports pulled the trans down,he called me right away. The clutch disc was 1/2 worn but the problem was the POS dual mass flywheel beginning to come apart. I still have it in my trunk. I can't blame VW because everyone has gone to dual-mass flywheels becuase they chatter less than flat "single-mass" flywheels by dampening the intertia more. Only thing is,they'e not durable for aggressive driving. My bet is the flywheel came apart and put a hole in the trans...Now I wonder if I sent my clutch, pressure plate and flywheel to VW,they'd assist me on at least the flywheel if not part of the labor, too. There's no way anyone could look at a 1/2 worn clutch disc at 53K and tell me the dual-mass flywheel seperating is my fault....
