I'm pretty sure my oil leak is coming from the part that my oil filter canister screws into. The filter canister is not wet itself, it's coming from behind that, and dripping on the black coolant pump directly in front of the engine.

The leak is not a gusher, just enough to drip a few drops on the garage floor.

VW and another garage quoted about $600, assuming I'm correct, and nothing else is cracked or leaking.

I'm pretty handy (replaced my timing belt, water pump, etc.), but am wondering if I want to do this one myself, or take it in and let them get their hands dirty.

Anyone out there who can share their experience?

Thanks,

Ron

If you did a timing belt job on your own, replacing the oil cooler or seal will be an easy task for you, there must be a write up in this regard in the forum and if there is not, one of the B5 should be useful as the procedure must be similar. I would not pay even $300 for this job. The job is not difficult but messy.

I literally just did this job last weekend. I didn't have the patience to do a video DIY or even picture DIY but I posted of my detailed list of pointers and advice for the job on the thread below on VWVortex. It should be helpful. The job is fresh in my mind so feel free to PM if you have further questions, I'll even drop you my phone # in PM if you wanna text or me or something. Cool with me, glad to help out.

It's certainly a manageable job and honestly not that hard, just a PITA due to tightness of space to work in if you do it the way I did it with minimal removal of other parts. Don't waste money at dealer, give yourself and afternoon/evening and take care of it yourself.
