Well stock is a relative term.... If the motor was stock then it would be 170hp.... :)

There are people with 300+ HP without extensive valve train modifications out there. I'd be more than confortable with 250. Above that you start getting into Clutch issues, etc, etc.

So if you had about a grand or so to put in your :b5: 1.8T would you stick with a chip, exhaust and air intake ? What would you do?

I'd do a Chip, J-Valve, Filter and that's about it. Oh Yeah Chas Bar (or whatever he is calling it these days... :) )

I personally don't think you are going to get anything out of a CIA system, but I have never used one on a 1.8t. I have the above done to my car and it's a very fun car to drive. All those are only about 800-900 total so you'll have a little extra cash left over to boot.

IIRC,BillyT blew his at 500+HP. So you have some room to play with.
