I have a 03 Passat with 43,000 miles, the cause, a 120 mile rountrip commute daily.
About 90% of these miles are highway miles at 70-75mph. My question is if it made any difference if the miles were city stop-n-go? Is my engine any better off having most of it driven on highway? What parts of the engine does it effect most?

Much better.

Easier on most everything.

The engine is most efficient while traveling at steady highway speeds.

Less wear on brakes, tires, suspension.

Easier on cooling fans, oil.

Just plain better.

For people in the US, I think Highway miles is better. If you live in Germany city type miles is better, because you're only doing 40 mph in steady traffic. On the autobahn, I'm pushing 120 normally if I don't car about the gas :lol:

I got me a W8, and there is a HUGE difference in gas mileage alone between highway and city miles. Sitting in front of light after light in the city, I can watch my gas needle drop down slowly. On highway, the car's 21 gallon tank could easily take me 450+ miles assuming I'm going a steady speed.

And as sharky mentioned, highway miles cause less stress on your car overall.

I have the a very similar commute (130 miles rountrip) at 80mph. The car just seems very content at speed.

by highway miles, you mean at full speed right? i was averaging 7 MPH on the 405 yesterday, and the MFD read an average of 11.8 MPG.

I do 120/day too, but only every other week since about September last year when I started car pooling. People remark that for 31k the car still looks and smells new, I don't even have many stone chips yet.

Mostly we are in the car pool lane, so the round trip is about 1hr 40 each day. 45 down and 55 back.

Yes like every body said high way mileage is much better,

for the brakes,
Engine,

If u have 5spd, less wear for the clutch, if u have auto, less wear for the transmission.
