Transmission Slipping and Clunking

The issue is the transmission is having difficulty finding a gear...2007 Passat 2.0 Turbo. Mostly when accelerating and trying to attain speed. Have apt with dealer Monday but am trying to find answers as to what to expect...maybe time for a new car? Hope not. Have been looking...and What is the Passat R?
