One easy thing to try: the next time it happens, crank it for at least 7 seconds continuously.

I'm more familiar with the gasoline engines, but I suspect the diesel also has an Engine Speed Sensor (ESS). The ESS fails "flaky," i.e. sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. The ECM requires the ESS signal before it fires the injectors (and coils), but will go in to a limp mode after about 5 seconds of continuous cranking wherein it fires the injectors anyway, even though the ESS signal is missing.

  • Thanks for the info.... The emissions workshop and yellow engine management light is on too. Could this have any bearing on the not starting?? 😔
